Look at the field of cars [ looks like a bunnings carpark on sausage sizzle day ] .
Would like to see the pampered pretty boy steerers of today and how  would go in a car thats got no aids and set up as is other than the bloke behind the wheel .. Pedaling their way through traffic . Dont reckon too many would be as relaxed as Brocky or Dicky J
No back room erks fiddling  electronic this n thats / adjustable  power / everything / cool suits / water cooled big brakes / carbon fibre this n that the list goes on ..

A good driver is just that ...a good driver. Apart from adjustable sway bars and brake bias, which they had in the "old" days, I don't know of any other "aids" the new cars have got over the old ones ?

Reliability

I've been following the V8's since the seventies, actually worked on Brocks car when he was driving for Gown Hindhaugh and sponsored by Bill Patterson during his lovers spat with GM. Those old drivers were great at handling those barges of old, amazing at holding them beasts on the track at the speeds they were doing, but i think the modern drivers are very talented too, in a different way, their cars are definitely a heap more drivable these days. I enjoy watching guys like Scotty, Chaz or Dave Reynolds when they are on fire as much as I used enjoy guys like Brocky, Tricky Dickie or Larrikan Larry belting around a track . Different times, different technology

can't see how you can compare the latest racing cars to the production cars of previous eras...

totally different beasts... it's not just the 'aids' that make a car better or worse...

design of components (weight, material, shape, etc)
reliability of components
better tyres
better brakes
more control over specific functions of the car, whilst driving
more data to improve car performance

put brocky, at the peak of his powers, in his VK 'big banger' and a current model 'commodore' and see which car he is faster in...

no doubt, the main difference is driving ability, but car improvement plays a huge factor as well...

as macca says, different times, different tech...

Geez, you'd never be able to compare the two and you couldn't even throw a new driver in an old car for any true comparison.

To compare fairly, lets say we put Whincup in a 69 GTS or anyone else even.
You would have to remove the run off areas, the chase, delete half of the safety barriers... the list goes on.

Sure, Whincup would be quick in a GTS, but with gravel traps, run off areas, he can afford to be.

Then, let whoever it is, drive around with no or limited contact except for a sign board or crude two way in later years.
Get rid of the multi function steering wheel. the only multi function in the old days, were being able to turn left or right and toot the horn.

Lets bung some tyres with 69 technology on board and maybe some old style brake pads as well.
We'll piss off the power steering, that's for girls.
The shocks should be reduced in quality too of course.

Get rid of the cool suit, reduce the air intakes to the cabin to winding down the window.
An open face helmet will be plenty, these cars never crash.

We'll bung some 69 engine technology in for good measure, say a pile of webers or a dirty big 4 barrel.

We'd need to lessen the fuel quality, but we could bung a bit of lead in it.
We'll need to ditch the nice snug seat and turf a bench seat or a low back bucket, depending on car type.
Piss the window net off, that's never gunna be needed.

Oh, i suppose, we could reduce the roll cage quality a heap too.
Using a standard body shell, we'll seam weld it and tighten it up a bit.

OK, we've all got the idea now....

Lets see how well any "newish" driver compares, after say 50 or 80 laps.

As the test went on, the quality of the car would suffer under wear and tear.
As the test went on, the quality of the driver would suffer under wear and tear.

Then stick all the others in same thing, Shit, we could have a real race again.

Even Touring Car Masters cars are better today then they ever were.

These newish drivers are much fitter than any of the "old" drivers ever were, so if Brocky could drive almost a full race at Bathurst in an A9X, the newish drivers would have no problem.
Everythings different from a new to old race car, so comparing them is useless. The old Falcons didn't need power steering....with a steering wheel that big and completely different mechanics from the steering wheel to the front wheels....as said, can't compare them.

But for the people who would rather watch the old style racing, there is the touring car masters and next year the 2ltr production class stuff....you won't have any trouble getting a seat at the track !! >:D

More chance of seeing passing maneuvers during a race and not in the pits...

I'd guess theres more passing in this one lap than a season of taxis...

Don't bet on it... oh... weight might have a small effect on 'em.

These things run a 429, 10.5 to comp ratio and a 700 cfm 4 barrel straight off the showroom floor.

1964 Cadillac standing quarter: 16.5
1969 Monaro standing quarter: 15.6

The big ol land barges are a tad quicker than most people give credit for.
With a reverse grid, the Caddy would be huge to pass.

Nope, is a matter of how big the penalties is. would have been around 45-50 sec in the race for a drive thru.

Van Giz may get away with it , the rules state that the wheels must not be rotating - as his wheels did less than one complete rotation and then that not be a penalty as rotating means more than one rotation .

I reckon he should go, first movement was going into gear, wheel spin was just before coming of the jacks and definitely more than one rotation. Van Gizz said he was having a clutch issue in a post race interview. Should be minimum 45 sec penalty.

Yeah if the last couple of laps are anything to go by.

tyre spun too quick to see how many revolutions there was.  Also wait the protest by DJRP for the bump.  Teach him to block I guess.
