Not legal in Australia from what I understand for two reasons.  You have to pedal to engage the battery to assist, no pedal no assistance and after 25km/h the electrics cut out and all power is supplied by the rider, no battery power.

Thanks, I had a look at that thread. Main difference is I'm after a commuter bike.

Thought I'd bump this post as I am looking at getting an e-bike and the posts are a few years old now.

Our circumstance slightly changed and at present haven't proceeded in getting a bike.
