Adopt a Greyhound

We picked up our adopted Greyhound today.

Ex race dog, 4 years old, knackered, chipped and house trained. Only $100.

We adopted him through the QLD racing association. So far, he seems like a very friendly and loving pet.

As I write this, I'm on the couch and he has claimed my Side of the bed with the missus.

Thought we'd let him have this one to help him settle.

Phase anybody adopted an ex racing greyhound?

Anybody got any advice? We live on acerage, so he has plenty of yard to run around.

Congratulations on the new family member. I saw a show on TV about adopting greyhounds and was quite taken with them.

We have been tempted to adopt one ourselves.  Was told they are real couch potatoes but will chase small furry things so need to be controlled well whilst walking.

After the decision in the People's Republic of NSW by Dear Leader Kim Jong Baird to ban greyhound racing from July 2017 there are going to be thousands of greyhounds either available for option or as fertilizer, mostly the latter.

My understanding is they also have a lousy sense of getting home, if they get out they don't know where to come back.

Clockwise or anticlockwise? Be good to know as if I was to adopt one, the neighbours on my right would probably call the ranger if it got out, whereas the neighbours on the left are much better and would put on a lead and bring home.

My sister adopted a Greyhound several years ago...
She said that make wonderful pets/companions..

Back last century when I was at school, this kid I knew always referred to his two Greyhounds so for ages I thought this kid had two greyhounds; I mean who'd lie about that right? Then one day I went to his house. They were Corgy's. I was very disapointed. He laughed. He's in gaol now, or at least was a year or so back - true story

Now I associate Greyhound racing with Queen Elizabeth.

I have 2 adopted hounds. And have had 3 over time. Hence the tag name.

They make great pets. Don't bark, don't smell, don't drop hair.

They don't need much exercise. They might run around the back yard for a couple of minutes, or go for a 20min walk. But then they go straight back to the couch or bed.

They just want to be with you, hence the nickname shadow dogs.

I have one who thinks he is a small lap dog so with jump on the couch and put his head on your lap.

So if you do get one be very prepared to lose half your couch.

As far as chasing small fluffy things, they are like any dog. Some might do it, some won't. Of the 3 we have had, only one has shown any interest at all in cats, possums or small dogs. Even then we also have a cat, and it rules the roost. Bloody thing.

Got 1  it a pain in the hallway at 5AM Couse its awake , so it need a pat  . What it dosent know is Yabbie season is coming up

We had a greyhound up until a couple of weeks ago. He was the best dog ever! Would recommend one to anyone. They just fit in so easily to any kind of lifestyle. Ours loved a walk but loved sleeping more! Don't think I would get any other breed now.

Just love him and he will love you right back.
