Making ice Cubes on the road

We have a few longish trips coming up, and I was wondering, how do people go about making ice cubes in a Evakool/Engel style portable fridge/freezer.

I have looked on the web and can't find anything. Are there special style containers you can get that allow you to make ice cubes in a moving environment ? Because water in ice cube trays just won't work...

What do others do ?

I freeze water bottles then smash them up into bags

Yep. The bags work quite well Mark.

Kay tell me she gets them from Safeway or Woolies, and they're in the freezer bag section....go figure.....

We have had trouble with the ice cube freezer bags wearing through with vibration and sticking to the base of the freezer when on the move. Might be how they are packed though

I was hoping to avoid taking an 'ice making' machine

Yep bags for us to, try to get them frozen over night, laying flat on basket floor with top edge vertical works great. They can leak slightly.
I have wanted to try the trays with lids for awhile,  anyone tried them?

Cheap, blended scotch maybe.  A quality single malt is destroyed by adding ice.

Have used Tupperware trays with a sealable lid and they work well.

I was at Spotlight Mt Gravatt last week and saw a range of s/steel cubes; balls; and cylinders that the packaging claimed you can use as a non-melting substitute for ice...

Just wack ya balls etc in the freezer and bingo!   ....  cool drinks!

I got some 'scotch rocks' for Christmas one year. Literally little impervious pebbles you freeze and put in your scotch.
I just buy a bag of ice on the road and fit whatever I can in the freezer at the time. I've never had enough spare amps to make ice.

Water in your Scotch is not the issue (aficionados are fairly evenly divided on adding a splash of water or drinking it straight).  The issue is the chilling effect of the ice and the subsequent reduction in the taste and aroma.

You need to use more than the number of ice cubes you usually use to get the same cooling but they never leak and will work if just chilled rather than frozen (if you don't have a freezer)

You can use them in wine as well.
