If i was going to use hooks, i think i would buy mawby hooks, they are made for the job.
https://www.caravansplus.com.au/13mm-mawby-hook-3500kg-atm-safety-chain-coupling-twin-pack-p-24623.html?gQT=1

Just looking at that site & spotted

That chain looks way too skinny for 3.5t hooks ???

The hook is hanging in the correct way in the picture, they make two size hooks for the chain size.

Pays to ring around
Anyone experience with Aus Seniors Insurance?

House and contents due and they seem competitive $$$

RACV -
Annual $1631

Aus Seniors
Annual $1731

Shannons
Annual $2445

AAMI  (current insurer)
Mth $2424

Seems quite a difference which usually concerns me..

Australian Seniors is underwritten by Hollards - a South African coy. Been in Oz for about 15 years. They underwrite Club 4x4 and KT in the offroad motor market too. The coy you would be dealing with is just the distributor or Authorised Representative. Shannons and AAMI are both Suncorp coys and RACV is sort of CGU. Personally I would choose RACV out of the 4 you have listed. They generally try a bit harder because their customers are club members. I haven't checked Aus Seniors pds but because it is aimed at the o55s it is probably ok. The demographic has better claims experiences and that is why the lower premiums.

Bird - further to my response to your question yesterday re insurance. I have analysed Australian Seniors pds and compared against RACV.

For the premiums involved Aust Snrs has some shortfalls that concern me. The main one is the Removal of Debris limit of $10k or $15k depending what option of cover you choose. This could leave an insured dramatically short. Most / many limit this to 20% of the sum insured but RACV is not limited other than what they agree to in order to clear the site. Disposing of fire damaged materials is exhorbitantly expensive now and limited to only one or two sites around Melbourne. As a property owner you would be obliged to clear the site regardless of what your insurer covers. The Aust Snrs cover wouldn't go close to covering it.

Water damage, theft limits, little things like alcohol, bikes etc etc are all much better under RACV (and most other insurers for that matter).

I  incorrectly assumed that Aust Snrs would be akin to Australian Pensioners which is quite a good cover but sadly I was wrong. It is little more than a very basic policy.

Awesome info and thanks for taking the time... happily O U a beer or 2

I didn't realize Aus Senior and Aus Pensioners were different...

APIA came in at $1421..

Interesting using their online calculators for working out values of contents and what is listed in their 'drop down menus' etc.. the amounts there varied with APIA coming in at 195k for contents where others were round 150k..

I don't know where else to post this.
Sorry it's a Facebook link, I've tried to find a YouTube link.
It's regarding, police not understanding that many of us 4wd owners have engineered vehicles, yet they(police) still pull over and fine owners.

Hey Bird,
It's wrong that good people are treaded in a way that others suffer for the actions of a few.
Not saying all Cops are over the top, but I've had my share of police not knowing the rules, bullbar protruding rules, Line of Sight, wheel  & lift regs.
It's frustrating having to deal with them, having to prove that your rig is legal.
Is more training of officers the answer, or is there another way so those that are legal, are not targeted?

Funny story about the reknown Mansfield anti 4wd copper/s. I was up there with my two sons and a few of their mates a few years back. We were about and hour into a gnarly track in low range and came across a steep decent to a creek crossing. Team leader offered to check it out before we all attempted it. He radioed back suggesting we find a chicken track oh and by the way there are a couple of coppers down here. Yeah right - we thought he was having us on. Sure enough we got down there and two cops on dirt bikes were trying to rouse two young fellas in a tent that was surrounded by rubbish. When they rustled the tent and called the residents to come out they were told to go forth and multiply. Like us, the occupants wouldn't believe there were cops this far into the scrub.

Our licenses were all checked and they told us they were clamping down on unregistered and unlicensed dirt bike riders. They glanced at our modified 4wds and suggested we stay out of Mansfield because the cops in town were - well lets say they were less than complimentary of them. We offered to clean up the mess these young fellas had made and the cops assured us the boys would be cleaning up their own mess once they emerged from their tent.

These two cops were conversant with mods and apart from one minor suggestion agreed that our vehicles were all compliant but that wouldn't matter to the Mansfield cops.

Good to see an MP earning his crust.

Yep. Got mates who Shoot/hunt, they are as frustrated as with it.

You would think it would be automatically recorded with your rego, any certificates of compliance regarding mods.
I've know vehicle owner(4x4, street cars) to have all the correct paper work with them, yet some coppers will still ignore this and fine/defect a vehicle.

when I had my GQ with the big lift etc it was engineered. the engineers report I had to take the engineers report to Vicroads and I believe it was registered with Vicroads. It seems they could while doing a rego and license check on the radio ask if its engineered/whats engineered
there was an article few yrs back linked here where the driver out in the bush actually showed the cops the engineers report, and still got defected

According to Poole, one officer had deemed the suspension on his LandCruiser as being “too crazy”, allegedly receiving a defect notice despite holding engineering certificates for the modifications.

A Nissan Patrol was also defected in nearby Mansfield, with the vehicle’s five-inch lift kit being “one of the highest lifts seen by the experienced members of the Solo Unit.”
obviously hasnt been round long  ;D ;D ;D

whats the point in doing the right thing and getting it engineered to make sure your rig is safe for all if some untrained person thinks he knows better?

The thieves used a piece of paper to disable the latch lock on their caravan door.

Trapped inside, the travellers apparently couldn’t do anything but watch as their belongings were taken away from them.

Yes, a well known issue...  paper, gumleaf, sticktape positioned across the latch and held in place by the wire loop that is used to keep the van door open.

Yeah, but they're "Trapped inside, the travellers apparently couldn’t do anything but watch as their belongings were taken away from them" but “They just have to sit in the caravan until it’s over, then climb out a window or something

Why couldn't they climb out the window straight away & stop their stuff being taken, or at least open the window & scream for help ???

Well in our van fly  wire fixed in place rules out climbing out unless you cut the fly wire first, and then any windows big enough for me to climb out are restrained by struts that prevent them opening more than 20cm or so....

That was something we noticed a couple of times while we were away - outside sensor lights on vans so if you walk "too close" (in both cases, it was along the park driveway in front of their site!) a couple of spotlights turn on!

May give you some sense of security, but not very nice for your fellow campers :-\

Heard on the news that councils want to ban wood fires in homes for heating due to the effects on climate change.
