This is all I mostly use and find beating the crap out of timber logs very therapeutic.

Only ever hired a hydraulic block splitter once.

don't talk to me about @%$&% firewood - stepson had a heart attack and while his mum was faffing about with hospitals and doctors and paperwork I held down his firewood business - four ton a day I split and stacked last weekend...!

but I loved the change from the office, and the weather was coffs coast perfect

I like to split my wood the old fashioned way. Releases all the angry bits for the week. just split 2m3 this weekend and feels good

Thanks mate.
So it's that easy? Just keep sharpened and away you go? Some of my logs are pretty thick

...but I was reading about just getting a block splitter or axe and although more labour, apparently its quicker and easier?

the best tip I can give you here is only cut your log the length that makes it easy to split. The longer the log you're trying to split, the more energy (swing of the splitter) it takes. The logs I cut normally range from 300mm to 400mm long.

Had the big blade sharpened for the saw bench and fitted it up. Noticed a engine mount was broken so welded that up. Might go cut a load tomorrow so I can try out the sharp blade.

I now have a wood heater in the man cave and I'm wondering what the going rate for 1m3 of redgum/hardwood is these days?
I have a good, high sided 6x4 trailer so I'd rather not pay for delivery, so where can I get it (Melb northern burbs) and what should I expect to pay?
Cheers.

if you don't mind a bit of a drive, Kinglake is a good place for quality wood at a good price. Best I've seen is $90m3, and up to $150m3.
Otherwise if you have a chainsaw, come with me to Mt Dissa next weekend and it's free.

Which day are you going Scarps?

There's a guy beside Eltham College in Research who from memory sells it for $150 delivered. I'll confirm next time I do school drop off.

Just purchased a Timberline  sharpener from the states, will be interesting just how much better and longer the chains will last. Report to follow once it arrives.

That looks very promising GG, let me know how you go. Looks much quicker to setup than the Oregon sharpener I use.

Small load this morning. Time to tie down and head home to try out the sharp saw blade. This box wood is hard so it will get a good workout.

BTW red gum here is going for about $120 a cube atm.

Yeah it is. Has been good, and a lot closer than Barmah!

I just did a favour for one of my mates and hoping he might lend me his hydraulic splitter in return. Though not sure where I'll stack all the split stuff. Might have to build a bigger shed....

Be sure to let us know how it goes. Looks like a good sharpener. If it works out OK, I might even grab one.

The stihl setup is the easiest to use. Either with a stump vice or a bench mounted one
