Advice on Aboriginal Cultural Tours

On our three month trip we would like the kids to do an Aboriginal Cultural Tour.

Can anyone recommend a good one?

We will be visiting all the main places, Katherine, Kakadu, Darwin, Litchfield, Kunnunurra, Gibb River Road, Broome, Cape Leveque and Bungles.

We don't want to spend a fortune, the one at Lombardina looks good but is a couple of hundred clams.

We did the lombadina spear making and crabbing tour - our kids 8 and 6 loved it. Didn't find many other opportunities outside that though. We followed a similar path to you across the top.

We have been to some fantastic National Park talks in the Top End by TOs and rangers. No charge other than the camping fees.

When we did the 3 gorge tour at Katherine, I thought the guide who drove the boat was very informative about his culture. He explained everything from what they believe when someone dies, how they gather food ie...when certain trees are in flower it means turtles are laying their eggs as a food source.... and much more.
The 3 boys dreaming tour at Birdsville is a good one also... and free

I can highly recommend the Ardyaloon Trochus Hatchery & Aquaculture Centre at One Arm Point https://www.visitbroome.com.au/discover/dampier-peninsula-ardi/ardyaloon-trochus-hatchery-aquaculture-centre

It's not rock art or a traditional tour like spear making, bush tucker etc... but it is run by the local Bardi people, and is interesting, and VERY hands on.

Among other things, you learn about and handle different local sea creatures, plus hand feed barramundi, and it can be hilarious watching people's reactions.

Our whole group, adults included, had a great time(though part of that may have had to do with the guide on the day).


There are also several mud crabbing/spear making/bush tucker/cultural tours up around Cape Leveque, and you can book some of them through Kooljaman resort  http://www.kooljaman.com.au/assets/tours.html

We arrived too late for the crabbing tour, but our friends went and really enjoyed it.


Although not a tour, the Mowanjum Art & Cultural Centre near Derby is also worth a visit http://www.mowanjumarts.com

If you are going to Alice, go out to the Desert Park they odd a great indigenous presentation and I feel the best that I have seen that actual does their race a world of good in the PR races.
