Help with GoPro Adhesive Mounts

A girl a work has kindly offered me the use of her GoPro for my 3 month trip away. She doesn't have any mounts with it.

Which mount do I want/need for using it while driving?

What size (GB) memory card do we recommend and how much footage will I fit on it?

Anything else I will need apart from what is in the box?

There are a wide range of mounts you can get, best to goto your local camera shop and have a look.  I have a double suction cup mount (like the gopro one but aftermarket with two suction cups), along with a mount I can bolt around a bullbar plus god knows how many flat mounts that are attached by double sided tape.

I use 16Gb SD cards, all high speed (10).  Another thing to do which has saved my cameras on a heap of times is make a tether.  I made a few different length ones using coated fishing trace wire.  Crimped a small loop at one end and a larger one at the other.  The small loop I use to attach under the main case of the camera and the larger loop is connected to something using a variety of snap hooks like what absailers use.

For charging on the go try and get a ciggy USB charger plug that outputs at least 1000mA (5v).  The 500mA will do the job but struggles.

If you have GoPro 2 with the wifi back pack or the GoPro 3 you can get an app for the iPhone to control remotely.  This uses a bit of power on both ends but it handy.

Ebay is your friend as far as mounts go. Without knowing exactly how you intend to use it, I'd suggest a suction cup mount, and several sticky pad mounts, and a 3 way adjustable stalk. Shop around on evil bay and you should be able to pick that lot up for under $50.

For the SD card, I use a 64Gig card, which will out last the battery.

Forgot to add that handlebar mounts are pretty much prefect for truck mirror mounting and roof cage mounting.

I use the roll bar mount on the bull bar, but more often than not the suction cup. They are unreal! Have a think about where you can mount it - on the bonnet, on the windscreen, on the roof, on the side of the car, under the car, behind the car etc

you can get various stick on munts that come of cleanly and easily with the edge of a credit card. also a suction cup mount is very handy.

you can use a 64gb card and depending on the resoloution you can get heaps on it, if you a taking a laptop or tablet you can upload to that and edit with the free software, cineform.

I see everyone says 64Gb card and that is fair enough. The reason behind me using 16Gb cards is to keep part separate for editing. Apart from the videos that some may of seen on my YouTube channel I make little videos for people and putting all you eggs(footage) in one basket(SD card) can go bad if something happens to that card.

Nothing worse than taking a heap of footage only to find out the card is corrupt and gets damaged. At least with a heap of 16Gb cards if one goes bad you still may have others with footage on them.

Also if you look close at te cards you will see a number in like a circle. A lot have a 4 speed but best to get 10 speed. It just means the speed it can place and retrieve data on that card.

Get class 10 cards (10 in circle) or the new UHS1 class. It is a 1 inside a letter U. Any less and if at the higher resolutions the card can't keep up with the camera.
Be a little wary of the eBay mounts some are a little cheap and prone to break. That's where a tether is a great investment.

Sounds pretty good to me. Told her I would discuss with the Mrs. That could be the hard part.

Tested it on the way home just sitting it on the dash and holding it in place and video was sensational.

For a Hero+3 and the card and mounts i'll buy it. Thats a bargain! The 3+ is over $500 new.

I agree with many smaller cards, rather than one big card, eggs/ basket etc
Also, get yourself one of the extension sticks, it lets you take selfies as well as a heap of other uses, like out the passenger side window while driving, right up close to animals, what ever you can come up with...also those small cameras get to be a pita to hold.
Have a think about getting multiple mounts that you can firmly secure onto you roof racks, sliders, bull bar, diff. Then you can just move the camera to where you want it rather than undoing/doing up the mount all the time. 10 minutes of fiddling for a 30 second "action" shot.

Be careful with the 64gig cards as some will not play back some times on some devices. I prefer to get 2 32's so I won't loos every thing if I loose the card or it fails.

If you buy a genuine Sandisk class 10 64 gb card, you should have no issues.

That's what I run in mine, and have filled it up in one day's recording. I'd get the bigger card, and just copy it across more often

Yes, I plug my go pro in anywhere there is a USB socket. Never had any issues.
I use the gopro suction mount and set the camera to record upside down as the suction mount won't sit right, right side up, if that makes sense.

I use either a suction cup windshield mount or I have a mount on my roofrack and swap between as required.

I bought a Wasabi charger and 2 spare batteries (eBay for about $40) for my GoPro 3. When one is flat, I swap it out, and put the camera back up recording.

One battery makes it a pain as you can't charge and record at the same time

Dont forget one of those mini tripods as well. Great for getting those selfie drive by shots! I use one all the time for my MTBing videos with my Contour camera. And a handlebar mount works great on the end of an annex pole for those high shots!
