Small tarp underneath the swag mainly to keep swag clean for roll up and provide a little protection to swag base......

I have never used a swag but if I did I would put something under it.  I will always remember an old WW2 British Army training film that I saw while in in National Service.  It said if you are in the bush and have only one blanket or ground sheet then put it under yourself.  Never put it over and lie on the ground no matter what the weather is like.

A swag already has a bottom which is really just a built in ground sheet but one extra certainly won't hurt for all the reasons already listed.

My swag is a 100% 15oz canvas standard swag and I just put it straight onto the ground. Wet, dry, mud, dirt, rain etc.
It has a thin high density foam mattress for comfort and insulation from the ground.

The only moisture I've had in the swag is from my breath when I put the flap over my head in bad weather.

Just remember to drape it over something during the day to dry out. I assume moisture would soak through eventually if you leave it on the ground for days on end.

Straight on the ground. The main driver for using a swag for me is the simplicity. Never had an issue and that includes putting it down on the snow.

Cgear mat is what I use, helps keep crap out of the swag and also crap off of the bottom of the swag.

The only thing I put under my swag is the camp stretcher; just roll out of swag place feet on ground and stand up, it’s that easy! swag is dry and off the ground.
