Warm/waterproof jacket.
« on: May 10, 2014, 09:46:57 PM »
So as the title suggests I am looking at getting a new jacket.  I had one that had a pretty good lining and hood from Rays that I burnt a small hole in the arm of, it is ok to wear if it is cold I guess but not wet.

Anyway a few questions am I better off just to have layers on and a warm jacket then a light water proof type jacket over the top?  Or to get a waterproof/warm jacket all in one?

As part of this has anyone had the aldi ski jackets as they are coming up next weekend.  I don't really go to the snow but I really struggle in the cold bad circulation cold feet and hands.  I have thermals if I need them and wear gloves scarfe beanie etc.  I have the aldi snow boots from last year and really like them.  Let me know what you have or like.

Thanks Scott when I shook hands with you guys at the end of the trip that was nothing on how cold my hands had been up at Craig's hut and white fingers from poor circulation.

I like layers, thermal base layer, work shirt, fleece and if it is wet long Gore-Tex coat. I usually buy gear at the end of the winter season where you can buy it cheap on special. If you buy a good brand you keep it for years, if you don't burn a hole in it :) I have Columbia fleece jackets that are 7 years old and a Mountain Designs Gore-Tex coat that has to be over 10 years old. I retire the older stuff to the Prado for dirty/muddy recovery work and keep the new stuff for normal wear. That said I bought the Aldi ski jacket and boots for my son last year and it is really good, especially as he grows out of it so quick and it is cheap.
I owe, I owe, it’s off to work I go…

Thanks D4D that is the sort of info I am after I have a drizabone that comes just below my hips which I had today.  I have thermal top and think I might get some more thermal singlets as if my back is warm I am usually better and I can still layer over these.  I burnt that jacket on the snow trip last year that evo ran perhaps on the ozpig when I was cooking lunch unsure just found a hole there I have tried to think how to tape it over for at least an old jacket.  I have no idea why I didn't look at the end of last winter sales.  I really like the snow boots but don't have ones to compare them too but I have worn them a few times they are comfy enough and keep my feet warm.

X2 for the layering.

When it's really chilly I'll even layer my feet with thermal socks, then explorers & thermal lined boots. Hands also get layered - thermal thin liners, polar fleece gloves then goretex mittens!

Getting back to the OP - a good goretex jacket over layers - you can then use the jacket by itself for rain when it's not cold  ;D

Cheers Tim I think I will have to look into some better gloves as well I do have a few pairs but think I need to have good ones for when it is really cold or wet.  I have explorers but not thermal socks.  Today had the cotton type explorers with the snow boots and they did a good job.

I wish they made Dri as a bones for the huskier gentleman... :(

:-( Lost this one is an rmwilliams one but was on some crazy marked down price at rays ones time last one left I think so I ended up grabbing it.  It still wasn't cheap but is a great jacket, would love another long one don't think my old one fits me :-(

Nay, you are more than welcome to grab one of Chantelles ski jackets? we love the aldi ski stuff, we have tons of it here and have gotten a couple of seasons so far out of them. Great value for money imo.
BUT be prepared for the craziest rush of bargain hunters ever. NOTHING that aldi stocks gets as mad a turn out as their ski stuff.
We get there at about 7am to get in front of the crowds, they generally have a sausage sizzle and coffee vans at the Wodonga aldi.

Eventually I will get a long one. I have the one already mentioned and a fleece sort of lined vest one I guess since you know there is one in Collingwood that you have already tried ebay and other online for one.

15 years ago I bought a RipCurl snow boarding jacket and it has been the best cold weather jacket I've ever owned. I always wear layers but this jacket I can just wear at shirt under in -0 temps and I am still warm. I usually keep my feet warm with work issued cold climate woollen socks and GP boots. I never feel the cold in them. I find that if my feet are warm then the rest of me usually is too.

Yes I try my best for warm feet, hands, and head I wish I didn't feel the cold so much but think I just need to spend some money on a good jacket and the better gloves

X3 for layering
I buy most of my camping clothes from Kathmandu.
If you keep a look out for their specials or clearence sales you can pick up some good bargains.
I prefer wearing merino than the thermal.

I have Aldi ski pants and they aren't bad fr the price. Thanks for the heads up re Aldi next week. Buy Merino thermals. Keeps you warm. I wear them on late shifts when I work the booze buses late at night. Liz is after a warm down coat or gortex jacket as hers is quite old (20 years) so might go to Rays and use our gift card.

Both me and the missus have Columbia Interchange jackets. We bought these to use in 2011 when we followed the Rugby World Cup around NZ. Needed something that would keep us warm and dry at a rugby game in Invercargill, in the rain, about 1degree, and they delivered.

They have a removable fleece inner and are 100% waterproof. They are the best jackets we have ever owned, and not overly expensive.

Anaconda sometimes has them, or if you have a DFO nearby there is usually a Columbia outlet there.

Im another one for layering but I don't buy expensive name brand clothing. I recently bought my son a good goretex hiking hardshell jacket on ebay for $25 because the seller didn't know it was goretex as it was not a well known brand (peak performance). We took a punt but was pleasantly surprised when it arrived and it was goretex ;)

My preferred option for warmth and wind/rain protection is thermal base, fleece mid and goretex outer. Maybe a down mid if things are antarctic.

Another +1 for the Aldi Ski gear!
We bought ski jackets for the whole family. We don't need them at home in Brizzie, but we bought them specifically for when we travel. They live in a duffle in the camper trailer.

I agree, layering makes a big difference but the ski jackets are quick and easy, especially for the kids, and especially if it's particularly cold right when we arrive to set up camp somewhere.

Cheers!
