I need one for work and have resorted in trying to use my gopro. I use mine as Magistrates don't believe what the copper says in court. I work by myself alot and the camera is my corroborator. So I dont really need GPS but may come in handy. Good for when you are following someone and the camera shows the speed one is travelling at.
Amazing how many people arc up and deny all. Tell them its on video and it never gets to court.  :police:

I have been reading this and other posts about the dash cams as I'm looking into it myself.
It seems here there have been 2 types recommended here in this post.
1. a purpose made camera for fixing to the dash that records vehicle movements in different ways, depending on quality and storage, some with GPS or without.
2. a muliti use sports cam, which can be used on the dash as well.
Is this correct?

Can the sports camera have GPS in it also, to look at the fun in google maps whilst viewing the video for e.g. Love to have that on my mountain bike.

The earlier post here about the Insurance being cheaper if camera / GPS Tracking fitted , what kind of tracking is that referring to? My understanding is it could be Logged in the camera only for viewing later in google maps, or, is it transmitted and someone can view this live if they wish, such as the thing to track a stolen car for e.g.

Thanks
Dave

Umm like why would you actually want one i hear the main reason is to record a traffic offence that you may be involved in

If that is the case you really need to have a hard look so you are saying you now go out prepared for a traffic accident and also prepared in case someone else lies about what happend, talk about cynical

To be honest it is getting stupid it is like the lady that god doored off her push bike in Melb and then demanding the guys details on camera. I totaly agree with him i would never give my personal details on camera that may end up on U tube or Facebook. I think she would have found the guy much more accomodating if the camera was turned off

I have one to record my offroad driving fun.
as it is permanently mounted in the car, it also records the various tools that are out on the roads also.

probably a bit harsh to say people are overly cynical because they don't trust others in the event of an accident.
I'm not sure there are many people around who would not try to mitigate their fault, even slightly, in the event of an accident.

plus, in the heat of the moment, people remember things differently, and its a proven fact that multiple people can recall totally different memories of the same event.
cameras don't lie - that's why NSW coppers (and soon QLD) will be wearing mini cameras when out on patrol - they aren't cynical, they just know human nature is to lie, or deflect responsibility elsewhere, and the only way to do that is record every interaction.

I think you're being a bit harsh.

by the way, I've got a bit of footage of a few clowns on the road, I usually show mates or the Mrs. technically, they are driving dangerously and should attract police attention, but in reality I just keep the footage or delete it depending on the awesomeness of the idiotic driving display. no need to bother mr plod over everything.
but I have used it on a nasty driver who broke lots of road rules blatantly - cops were grateful for the vision and remarked how clear and brilliant the footage was.

hi mate - I don't know much about the go pro, but a mate has one and these were his observations after viewing footage from mine -
1 - mine is much clearer - has the brightness option and night vision, and higher definition
2 - the go pro has like a fish eye lens - kind of stretches the vision if you know what I mean. mine is dead flat and wider than his. not sure how to properly explain it, but if you saw both together you would understand.

massive benefit to gopro is portability and in built power - mine needs 12v power.

don't think you can get live tracking of your unit - maybe the high end units, or 'black boxes' which are pro units in some big rigs that record more than just vision, like speed, braking etc..  mine logs all data and vision to a SD card for viewing and editing - the unit does not retain any data.
oh, and i forgot to mention that mine has a function to turn itself on when I'm away from the car if it detects motion, or shaking of the vehicle.
so if anyone breaks in, chances are i will have them on tape - always park rear in to carparks and out the front of the house!

I have a Mobius action cam, got it of flea bay for $70 plus the memory card.  It's stuck to the dash with velcro and occasionally comes cycling with me.  Resolution is great, low light average but for the money it's pretty good.  I have it set to start when I start the car and stop when I stop.  This is controlled by the power from the USB in the ciggy lighter.  Some footage here

the camera needs to be mounted higher though.

Bought a Kogan last week.  Sent it back this week. Resolution is absolute garbage. Even for $29 it was not worth keeping.  Pity the people who pay full price for it.  Time to do more research and get something decent.

Don't discount the Ipass. I love it. Excellent quality video and stills.

But the blackvue is a good piece of kit I believe.

If I were to buy another car cam today, it would be the Vico TF2+ Dash Cam.

This camera has it all and the night footage is outstanding.

Got it here http://stores.ebay.com.au/eletoponline365?_trksid=p2047675.l2563, free postage.  Resolution is much better when recorded, Youtube really do squeeze it down a lot.
