Then to expand on GeeTee's excellent recommendations when you move onto the vehicle there will be a thousand opinions my being
first aid kit and go to your doctor and get a script for broad spectrum anti-biotics
recovery points
recovery kit
tyre pressure gauge and a compressor to go with it and a shovel if sand driving. Also handy around the camp fire cooking and toilet duties
Tyre repair kit
dual batteries if you have a fridge
UHF radio, mounted or handheld or both
sand flag for the desert
LT tyres in preferably all terrain or mud terrain
after market suspension all though you can get by with relative new OEM suspension, just have to allow to stop to let the shocks cool down and drive to the conditions
If you have a wagon a cargo barrier is a must have and you could nearly put that at the top of the list.

You don't need to purchase
winch
bull bar
sliders
driving lights
sat phone (hire one at either Mt Dare or Birdsville depending on your direction)
max tracks
rear drawers
high lift jack although they can come in handy very rarely though

others will have ideas as well

I don't agree with no bull bar and lights. The area he is travelling is full of wildlife and an animal strike can be fatal or render the vehicle stuffed. Also as with any sand driving MaxTrax, they re very handy if you are travelling alone. While we had them during our Simpson crossing and did not need them I have used them while in Cape York.

Just my opinion based on the travel w have done.

This is where I bought my Sand Flag, I bought the split one so I only needed to remove the top half when in town

I think they are priced right. When we were in darwin last we went around the local 4wd shops looking for a flag to come back down the flank of the simpson and they were all well over $100. We ended up buying some fluro orange material at spot light and was going to cable tie one of the fishing rods to the UHF antenna LOL But we didn't end up needing it.....didnt see another vehicle for 2 days on the track we took.

Whilst I agree generally with your reply Alan has asked for a list of essentials for a Simpson crossing. The speeds travelled on the actual crossing itself are fairly low and the amount of wildlife to be encountered would be minimal. As far as maxtrax are concerned a shovel and tyre pressures are a useful option for unbogging (is that a word) and if you are really stuck another traveller can assist with a gentle snatch recovery. Granted you may wait quite a few hours if travelling solo but not the end of the world. A bull bar and lights will set you back at least $2k which is a lot of coin.

As I said at the start of my reply that I generally agree with your reply I will say I have maxtrax, bulbar and lights for the reasons you mentioned but I have added these over time. To kit up for this specific trip in a short amount of time I think money should be spent elsewhere first up and if you have the coin then by all means add these other bits.
All my opinion and experiences like you have yours and which are going to be different to others but this is what it is all about

Thanks guys, as it happens I have a bullbar on the Patrol so that's not an issue for me.  I hope this thread may be of use to others setting up for the outback so the thoughts are appreciated.

Cheers

I'm not sure many would agree with the Simpson being full of wildlife at the moment. Great big fire in 2012, dry few years, National Camel Management project...  in 2013 many scientists were getting very few animals during their wildlife surveys, some reptiles and very few mammals. I would suggest that the risk of striking a animal as negligible.

I have never had an animal strike although I try not to drive at dawn or dusk. on the road by 8am, off the road by around 4pm. in fact i'm hoping to remove my full bulbar and go to similar to a tube bar
