I doubt we'd be looking at crossing again, as seeing we're both going in the same direction and I have no idea about what's about, I'll probably just follow you.

I think I read on here that the pub at Birdsville is far better than anything else on offer?

yes the pub has nice accomodation, but the van park also has some cabins available aswell. the van park has both powered and unpowered sites available for those who want them also, either place is a good option to stay at IMHO.
as for the drive along Walkers Crossing Track from Innamincka to Birdsville mentioned earlier...in good conditions it's an easy day trip, we recently did it in 5 hours towing our camper trailer. we didn't stop off to visit stuff along the way (Wills grave etc) as we needed to get to Birdsville, but we did stop quite a few times to take pictures along the way, so it can be done even quicker then what we did it in if the need be done.

Just curious, anyone thinking about going to Uluru from Mt Dare?

No worries gregnleanne, was only thinking about it because my better half would like to see it, we'll save Uluru for another trip, Cheers

I think two nights at Birdsville is overkill. Spend one full day and you'll be right to head off. We arrived during the day, did our washing and looked around and the next day we were gone. I will do the one way trip if I can go and head to Chambers Pillars.

Ok given the feedback and some great info from embers at the national meet I have adjusted the itinerary. I have shortened it so we can fit it into a 2 week trip for thoses who want toi bullet run or who want to go on with other things.

I planed this off the hema map so you can follow the route from that.

It means we get to see a bit of the southern end of the Simpson desert and get to see BIG red in daylight on our way thorough to B/ville and then come back for a sunset photo having seen the track.

It only involves 72ish kms of double tracking from Popell to B/ville.

3 nights hard camping followed by B/ville and then 4-5 nights hard camping before Mt dare. For thoses who wish to get out of dodge they can and the rest can plan a few days around the mt dare area.

This has NO RETURN X-ING, after speaking with a few people who have done the trip this itinerary gets us onto varied surfaces and vegetation and I think works well. But open to suggestions.

PHASE 1
MON 25th  Day 1 -Meet Inaminka
Tues 26   Day 2 Inaminka to Warburton crossing 250-300K
Wed 27   Day 3 - Warburton X-ing via Warburton track onto K1 to Poppel Corner ( Camp somewher on the K1 line)
Thurs 28  Day 4 - Poppel to B/Ville via QAA Arrive before lunch spend afternoon refuel ect load up

PHASE 2
Fri 29       Day 5 B/V into simmo (QAA line to popel -onto FRN 40kms then left turn onto Knolls track 43kms R/T onto rig road 34kms R/T onto Erabena track 43 kms later L/T back onto French line.
Sat 30      Day 6 Simmo  French line
Sun 31     Day 7 Simmo French line
MON 01    Day 8 Simmo French line

Looks good, the only thing I'd suggest is the first night after crossing, everyone might like to spend at Dalhousie to have a swim in the hot springs. There's no fires allowed there any more but that might change before then.

I'd be keen to do a trip out to old Andado Station again and spend some more time out there if anyone was keen. There are a lot of camping opportunities in the area.

Hi Guys,
when we went across this year, we all planned to stay at Mr Dare. We all stayed back at Dallhouise... There's not alot at Mt Dare (nor nearby) and it's dusty and although has fuel and pub a single day trip is enough..

We crashed at Dallhouise for a few days was a much better option...

I'm considering joining this trip BTW.. Just don't know where we will be..

Three days in Mount Dare? The only reason we went there is to fuel up. May I suggest taking longer to do the crossing. A quick visit to Mt Dare is more than enough. When I look back at our trip a few years ago, I feel as not enough time was spent out there in the wild. Yes it is only a desert but time goes real quick. I love it out there and would happily spend ten days from Big Red to Mt Dare.  ;D

I think by Mt Dare he means the general vicinity. There's a bit to look at that side of the Simpson :)

The Kms look small each day but the aim is to enjoy the environment rather than do a bullet run, reports have 2-5 days as the allocated time to allow if cond are very good the 5 day trip will be at a very relaxed pace if conditions are bad then we will need the 5 days. So it makes sense to allow the 5 days.

So after leaving dalhouisie we can go into mt Dare and then push onto a nice place and have anothe 2 nights in that region ,Not taking people to far away from thier need to head home but as Danny G said there appears to be some great places within striking distance maybe even end up at oodndatta.

I also have a suggestion if any one is interested you could also go to Chambers Pillar following the Binns track from Finke. This also follows the old Ghan rail line. theres plenty of camping and its about a 500K return trip or just home from there.
Just a thought

There are far to many individual travel plans to consider to cater for everything so just like previous Myswag trips the core 10-12 days will be planned as a trip and before and after that people can head off in all manner of directions.

Given that many people seem to be expressing an interest in moving further afield after the crossing the days may need to be capped at 10days for the official trip, this would give people a few days to move off and see something they like before heading home if they have only 2 weeks off work.

I am sure we will split into smaller groups with some heading north some west some south depending on their time available.

So How does everyone feel about making the actual X-ing trip 10 days it would look like this

PHASE 1
MON 25th  Day 1 -Meet Inaminka
Tues 26   Day 2 Inaminka to Warburton crossing 250-300K
Wed 27   Day 3 - Warburton X-ing via Warburton track onto K1 to Poppel Corner ( Camp somewher on the K1 line)
Thurs 28  Day 4 - Poppel to B/Ville via QAA Arrive before lunch spend afternoon refuel ect load up ( look to do sunsett pics on big red)
673 KMS

PHASE 2
Fri 29       Day 5 B/V into simmo (QAA line to popel -onto FRN 40kms then left turn onto Knolls track 43kms R/T onto rig road 34kms R/T onto Erabena track 43 kms later L/T back onto French line.
Sat 30      Day 6 Simmo  French line ( camp to be confirmed)
Sun 31     Day 7 Simmo French line ( camp to be confirmed)
MON 01    Day 8 Dalhousie springs or close
Tues 02    Day 9  Dalhousie springs - Mt Dare (Stay or pass through)
Wed 03    Day 10 Mt dare (surrounds) Looking for ideas suggestions in this area for the last night

So if people had to be back at work/home on the Monday they have 4 days to visit a personal preferred location on their way home or for others who are continuing on their adventure I am sure a few of us will stay hooked up can visit extra places.

Thoughts on the 10 Day version........  I think it makes more sense given there is just so much to see and do and some people will head home north some south ect so a few extra days will work out very well.

I am seeking feedback as I would like to lock in the core trip in the next few weeks  so we can then look at camping locations in each stop more closely.

Most said yes, so if we drive into town before lunch having driven up big red to sight the track we can drive into town look around set up camp fuel up and drive out for the sunset on big red as the photo op is very good i am told , maybe dinner at the pub and roll out next morning was my thoughts.

Hi Alan
We arrived at Birdsville during the day and the following is what we did apart from refuelling. Checked out the museum, bakery, the pub,the old police courthouse, had a chat with the local copper(ex vic police) and bought a book about Tom Kruse. Im sure there are a few other things in and around the area. But one day is enough IMO

All sounds good to us just looking forward to it.
we are currently Alice Springs and have been here the last 3 months so the areas around Alice have been well and truly visited by us and we have posted some pictures on the swag FB page.
were going to head south to the flinders rangers via fink mt dare and on south so saving the desert crossing for next year :)
