Change of plans, crunched a deal on this today, a new 2015 GT Sensor Pro Carbon, 150 up front, 130 in the rear

Just took it for a quick ride, I think this 1x thing is for young/fit people, I'm going to miss my 24T ring, that said it's very quick and comfy.

I've always tended to cover ground rather than jump and play - I'm based up in Northern NSW so we have some good riding here (Fat Tyre Farm, UNE Track, Piney) so traditional cross country and in place proper old swoopy tight single track.

I've never ridden a full susp, love to do a couple of hours on one 

The big thing for me - hills are hard work - I can't give away any power/energy to get up them.

I've just bought a 130mm travel dual suspension and yeah it is harder work going up the hills, but a whole lot of fun downhill and more comfy in the technical bits.

Paddler Ed, I'd consider the Spark instead of the Scale, it has a 'climb' mode lockout, doesn't make it a hardtail but almost there. Depending on the tightness of your trails, I'd also consider 27.5 rather than 29.

Yeah the GMBN boys know how to ride a bike that's for sure.

Still tossing up whether to 'upgrade' my new bike from a 1x to a 2x, sacrilege I know. Might try a 30T on the front instead of a 32T.

Tubeless is also awesome, I had about 10 PSI in the rear to see how it went and I couldn't rip the tyre off the rim and had lots of grip.

The other thing is I'm 6'4" and 34" inside leg, so I ride an XL frame (all my bikes are 20" frame +). This makes getting something a bit more of a challenge.

I'm also 3hrs+ from a bigger town for more choice of brands, hence the Giant and Scott (the other bike shop in town is run by spotty oiks who seem to be there so that the family can claim their daughter is a semi-pro rider... the shop I use has a pretty good reputation over the last 40 years for racing and supporting racing)

Well.... that phone call forces my hand a little bit - there's no XL Anthems left in the country in the spec I wanted... so... back to the drawing board...

Ed, I always buy at my local bike shop in Maffra, (make sure prices are competitive), and enjoy his expert ability to maintain any little things that need tweaking.

He can do in 10 minutes things that I'd probably never get just right, especially in gear selection, spoke maintenance, rim truing, bearings & similiar. Never charges much $$ and does it right !! Never hesitate to recommend that business to friends and acquaintances, speaks for itself.

Re the brand Ed, a lot of the frames in a given price range and fit out probably aren't all that different re the service they will give a new owner.  When we bought the couple of new FELT 29ers recently we looked around at other shops in Sale, 3 or 4 bike brands to get an idea what was about and went back the usual LBS & bought them round $920ea with a few bits and pieces thrown into the deal.

Hard decision but unless a brand is getting sh*te canned big time it should be OK for you.

Mention by D4D re tyre grip, I'm loving the grip of the 29er tyres, those big diameters certainly have a long grip surface and are good in other ways as well, as prev. mentioned. (Not a full on quick/hard rider by any means, just getting fit !)

Motor in there! I saw the new specialised e fat bike the other day. 'Taint cycling but I still feel I want one. It'd be perfect for commuters.

I lost the bike shed this weekend - we have a friend visiting and a serious shortage of space when we need to use the spare room for anything other than bike shed duties!

Picking it up Monday is the plan - went in to see them today to let them know what was happening and they were happy enough.
