Android vs iOS for offroad navigation
« on: August 04, 2011, 03:44:11 PM »
I've decided a tablet would suit my needs for off-road (and on-road) navigation, but I'm wanting advice on what platform.

From what I've gathered:

iOS has VMS, Memory Map and Bit Map as the best apps (Mud-map is heading away from 4WD use).

Android has Androzic and OziExplorer (beta)

Does anyone have any suggestions/comments to help me decide which way to go?

PS, I already own the Hema maps, AUSLIG maps and Sunmaps.

Ryangus, I have been using Androzic with hema maps recently on our 6 week trip to Cape York. The maps were installed into a HTC desire Android phone, but worked perfectly.  I cant see why they would worl on an Android OS Tablet.

Is MotionX GPS on the Android too? Great navigation app on the IOS.

The new version of VMS is also coming out shortly with AUS wide iTopo and Gregory Raster maps built in.

Cheers, Sam.

I am looking into using an Android tablet to. I have full Ozi software with Hema 4WD maps, my only worry is do I buy a 7" or 10.2" tablet. I have ordered a wind screen holder from HK for the 10.2", but think it may be to big, or should I say to noticeable to Mr Plod  ;D.
I have a 6" Chinese GPS which screen res is terrible, but was able to check out a mate 7" tablet and the res is heaps better, but now the 10.2" has 1024 x 600 resolution up against the 7" at 800 x 400. So more research to do  ???
