You will need to take it your local roads transport mob. It will need to be weighed, and i remember when OffRoadDave built his needed to show all all the relevant receipts etc.

In NSW they put the VIN on the plate when you have the roadworthy inspection and the plate is fixed to the trailer. I just had to pay the $.

Ah righto some one was saying the number had to be welded onto the chassis ?
so it's the number that goes on the plate then riveted to chassis is it then .

HI Guys

The Vin Number needs to be on the ID Plate and stamped on to the main chassis/draw bar in an easy to read place
Also you might need a build number if it is home made just make one up 4 numbers should be fine

I think in Qld you buy a manufacturer's plate from the transport transport, they will issue with a vin number which you stamp on the plate.

Have a look at this pdf file from Qld transport

Yeah what JC said. In QLD go to the Dept road Transport they will give you the plate and VIN number ( which will be registered to you) after you give them $$. You can have plate engraved or stamped. You can tow your trailer to the weigh bridge then to roadworthy then to DRT with out it being registered. some where between roadworthy and DRT you will have to stamp/ engrave plate and mount to trailer before DRT inspect it. I beleive that this is for braked trailers (roadworthy inspection)
You dont have to weld form the VIN no onto trailer i think its only for security purposes. There is a metal recycling place near simms metal on Spillar Ave, Outer Harbour MKY that have a weigh bridge which you can use for a gold coin donation.

If some one steals your trailer and you only have the ID plate they will remove and replace it with a new one
If the VIN number is stamped into the draw bar even if it has been ground or sanded off they can still xray the area and find the original number
I have the Vin number stamped in several places on my trailer
Any trailer builder will have a set of stamps
