Got a new camper - now for Insurance
« on: May 02, 2011, 09:24:13 PM »
So I did a search, and not much info covering this item.

So how many of you insure your campers/vans?

Who with? Is it part of house/contents for some insurance companies?

Is there specialist insurance companies out there for this type of cover? Similar to Shannons for antique cars?

Any suggestions?

I have a custom built 7x5 heavy duty gal trailer and Ezytrail camper top.... approximate value (with all other gear that will normally be stored in it) or atleast when i'm away would be around $10-15K.

i just called CIL - terrible service received.

she wouldn't give me a quote unless i gave my full details - she said it was because it stayed on the system for 12 months.

she also asked about a 2nd listed person for the policy.. i asked why you would need a 2nd person listed for the policy, when you were covering a camper trailer.. explained that it was in case it was being driven.. i said "its a camper trailer"

then told me the fridge inside was covered and that i couldn't remove it so it shouldn't be part of the contents.. i again explained, it's not a van, it's a camper trailer

she wouldn't send me any information to read, just to visit the website.

is this typical?

I found the same "expert" level of knowledge when I rang them...if the thing isn't on their database, they haven't got a clue what they are talking about...

And their price was $100 more than Gio ( who I have only one policy with......they were cheaper than NRMA, who I have 4 policies with )

But now I'm a senior citizen....I'm slowly shifting my stuff over to APIA....they have been cheaper than everyone so far...

I found similar things when I was getting quotes, policies seem to be written for caravans, one place wanted to know how long the trailer was which seemed more like a caravan style classification. In one policy the applicable term was a tent-trailer but the consultants are very uninformed on these.

We ended up going through TCIS brokers who then insured the camper the CIL and our camping gear with CGU. Not the cheapest but they were good to deal with and I'm happy with the level of cover.

I phoned TCIS and they were about $120 dearer than RAA and covered us for less too.

It took them nearly a week to get back to me with the quote too.

I recently bought my first camper, a 2nd hand 2004 cameron camper. I called a few insurance companies including CIL however none of them would cover contents if they were inside the annexe. It had to be locked in the trailer itself. I ended up going with GIO, $10000 camper insurance, $3000 contents insurance. Contents is covered inside the annexe. If an accident happens whilst driving it doesn't matter who was driving. I can be anywhere in Australia as long as it is legal to be there. All for $188.00. The CIL quote was over $300. So I would recommend giving GIO a call.

All insurances with GIO (house and 2 cars).  Multi policy discount:

$8500 trailer insurance for $170 (Rural City, parked under cover).

Cheers to all.

My 2 cents worth,

I shopped around when I bought my Tambo and the lack of knowledge from the 'people' I talked with over the phone was amazing.  Long story short - I stuck with AAMI, with whom I have business, home and just about everything with, even though it took me 3 phone calls before I cracked it and demanded to talk with someone with some experience.  Moral of the story,  talk with those who know what their product is, unfortunately some (many) of those you contact initially will not have a full product knowledge.

Shame about the customer service from CIL. We went through a broker who did all the home work for me. CIL insured the contents of our camper for things such as the engel and genny etc (if they are not stored in the camper and are out being used - they just need to be "attached" (by a chain) to be covered. I was able to get additional insurance for items such as the genny and camping gear if it exceeded a total of $5000 i think. Things like jewerly or wallets etc just had to be "locked" which usually are at night anyways within the tent. I havent had to claim anything yet touch wood. I was more concerned about being covered anywhere in Oz including offroad and remote areas. The only thing we are not covered for is salt water damage and permanent tennant caravan park. Cameras etc are covered on our home insurance.
