Car cross roads
« on: February 13, 2016, 04:50:22 PM »
Hi guys,
Sorry for the repeated questions but I'm at a crossroad. I have two options for a camper trailer tow car and tourer come daily driver.
So the options are either a bt50 dual cab or a Toyota prado. Has anyone had experience with these two vehicles and what are people's opinions of these two cars.

I'd go the Toyota just because it's a Toyota....... :cup:

Two vastly different rigs ur debating over, with one being a ute and the other a wagon....... how many bums on seats is the normal at ur place? If u have 2 /3 kids the wagon would be the comfier option as the kids grow, if it's just you and ur better half, well the ute with a good canopy or rear box would be ideal for stacking plenty of gear....

Take both for a drive, find one ur better half prefers to drive, that ur also happy with..... remembering a full set up ideal tourer might not cut the mustard for the majority of the year when it's being used as the daily commuter.... and nothing worse than buying a car that the Mrs mainly uses and doesn't like,,, you'll no doubt live to regret that decision.  ;D

I have contemplated this myself , in our case it only the wife n me. Like the idea of the dual cab versatility but after having 2 previous models in the Prado when we recently updated we went with another Prado. Base model GX 5 seater is sufficient for our needs , tows our 12 ft off road van with ease, and is so comfy.

If you turn cars over pretty quickly the Prado will have much better resale and demand. Other than than test drive both and see which you like best! Either will tow the camper with ease and good fuel economy.

I have a ranger. My mate who I camp with has a Prado. The Prado is much shorter in length and wheelbase and is much easier to drive and park in the city. The ranger pretty much requires reverse parking everywhere I go due to the wheelbase (400mm longer wheelbase than a 200 series).
The two feel similar on the road - the Utes are good these days. Mine has ome suspension though. A Prado Kakadu with the kdss suspension would belt the ranger. We would both rather the ranger for towing - longer wheelbase, bigger torque, rear leaves makes it stable and a no brainer not to mention the bigger tow capacity. The Prado still tows well though. Out on the blacksoil roads with big vans on his Prado gets thrown a bit. The short rear overhang of the ranger and the big lever out the front makes it very stable for towing.
Offroad, the intuitive hdc, diff lock and wheelbase also tip in the ranger's favour. His prados hill descent control is pretty woeful and is a start stop affair. I leave mine on all day and it knows when to help. If you are buying an auto and do some half decent offroad, hdc/tc is worth looking into IMHO.
If I didn't need a ute for work, a td auto Prado would be high on my list of things to look at for resale if nothing else. They are a nice car. The observations above are just nit picking from time spent in both. They both have good and bad points.

I've a 2013 td auto Prado my brother has a bt50 of about the same era have driven both towing he had a camel.  Greater versatility in the ute but with 3 kids and growing the 7 seats won it for us. I'd have either but it s horses for courses.  We have had no issues with the Prado comfy to drive decent on diesel and comfortable ( but I'm comfortable in a defender ).
But swmbo isn't

Cheers guys just seems we are so spooky for choice! There was a time when you would only buy toyotas due to there reliability Evan tho they cost a bomb! Now it seems other brands can keep up with the best of them. I think I might go the bt50 at this stage only for the fact I could set it up for a tourer and put up with it more then getting a prado for the wife and her drive around a setup 4wd. As always everyone's advice is much appreciated thanks
