I recon drinking straight from the hose tastes great, my problem is I get a plastic taste.
Not a hose taste, there is a difference.

The blokes aren't soft they're just worried about losing the lead in their pencil- http://www.livescience.com/29401-bpa-testosterone-levels.html
Or perhaps it's really the gals that are worried  ;D
There's no Great Evil conspiracy against consumers within engineering, manufacturing and supply. Just the many tradeoffs incurred to satisfy diverse tastes, priorities and wallets. But first comes all the insatiable Gummint eggsperts, nanny-staters and usual suspects.

The true answer is nobody knows and here's a good precis of the state of play- http://www.todayshomeowner.com/are-plastic-water-pipes-safe/

The plastics industry will tell you certain products are best for certain uses like these guys- http://www.vinidex.com.au/solutions/infrastructure/water-supply/

but can any of them guarantee there's no long term exposure consequences after a generation or two? Not likely, particularly with new types being developed like PEX, but they're reasonably confident what they're using is relatively harmless. However for consumers, there's always going to be that nagging doubt whenever there's a plastic taste in their mouths.
