for the IT guys... HP Microserver died...
« on: January 22, 2015, 01:21:42 PM »
long shot, but i'll try anyways... :)

i had a HP Microserver N36L that was acting as my NAS for home (worked a treat), but the power supply is now bung...

just checking to see if any swaggers of an IT persuasion may have one of these (or an N40L or an N54L) that they don't use and would be willing to sell?

if not, no dramas, i'll just buy a replacement unit...

Sorry, don't have one but have been contemplating getting an N54L to run my NAS currently in an old PC box which is noisy and ugly.
Am running Unraid as the OS which is pretty much hardware independant so not hard to swap boxes.

Good luck with the search, tried fleabay? Are you looking for the whole shebang or just the p/s?

great little unit...

i've looked at ebay.  i can get a n54L for about $280, but am looking for the power supply by itself if i can...

cheapest so far is $80 delivered from the UK...

ShoppingExpress have them on sale at the moment...

Since you've got the disks already, maybe get one of the diskless units ?

Hi Paceman
I don't think that one is very non-standard

If there is a MSY store near you
pull it out and take it in.
They are pretty good and good prices too.
Time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time.....

Yea I know its not a normal one...

I might just buy a new box and keep an eye out for a power supply and keep the dud as a backup...

I work for HP - I'll see if I the power supplies are available ex-parts tomorrow :)

MSY, etc won't sell them - they're a custom power supply unfortunately...

the PicoPSU is used by quite a few people as an alternative http://www.mini-box.com.au/PICOPSU-150-XT.html

Well, ended up getting a new n54l and it works a treat.  Would still be interested in a power supply if one turns up...

Paceman, OT but would be interested to hear what OS you are using for your NAS. Always on the search for other things that work well.

i use windows 2008 r2.  rock solid and works with all of my devices.

if i can get a power supply for the old one, i am going to look at trialling omniOS and napp-it, to have a closer look at ZFS...

I'm using unRaid as mentioned above. Uses a parity drive and (on the free version) up to 2 data drives. Up to 23 drives if you pay. After losing 2 Tbytes of data (was backed up thank goodness) on a Netgear Nas after the nas itself died and no way of getting it back I decided this was a lot safer environment.
Very easy expansion
Drives can be mounted from any linux box
Parity drive can recover a failed drive
Other drives can recover a failed parity drive
Spins down drives when not being accessed.
Plugins
etc etc

Just running in old pc case atm but fans too noisy and only 100m eth0 link. Time to look around for a new box

well, I've found out that I can't source one internally (work for the wrong division of the company) ...

I do, however have the current part number, 620827-001, which supersedes 625147-001, but they're not cheap... the only Aussie seller I've found so far is here http://store.emprgroup.com.au/ProductSearch.aspx?searchterm=620827-001 - there are a few of both part numbers on eBay, but around the $150 delivered from the US

I'd recommend going down the PicoPSU path... there are some for $23 on eBay from Sydney http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/PicoPSU-120-genuine-120W-DC-DC-mini-ITX-Power-Supply-Used-tested-working-/221678413290?pt=AU_Components&hash=item339d1025ea
