Painting after big trip
« on: July 21, 2014, 07:35:35 AM »
Having just done 2 big Myswag trips involving dirt/rocky roads, there are some areas of the camper that have light surface rust from stones peppering.

I'd like to be able to re-paint the areas.

Is there anyway/anything to treat the light surface rust and then paint over the top of it ?

Also, is there anyway to do the same thing on a checkerplate storage box ?

I have just rubbed back the effected areas with some wet and dry sandpaper or a wire brush in some cases then undercoat and top coat with Rustguard color. As for your front box try something like CLR and then give it a polish.

Craig, thanks for this. I was hoping there might be some type of treatment I can paint over the top to treat/seal the surfacerust, and then just pain over the top of that. Some of the areas are hard to get at and sanding not so easy.

Try one of those wire brush attachments for your drill...

Something like this might be what you are after: http://www.whiteknightpaints.com.au/specialty-paints/metal/rust-guard/prep/rust-converter

There's heaps of different brands and you can get it from hardware shops and automotive retailers.

I've used it before and it seems to work as it says and it's easy enough to use. Makes a bit of a mess but other than that it's ok.

Appreciate the responses....I might have to use all 3....the light sand papering, wire brush on drill, and the rust coat.

Thanks
