Murray River - so many choices!
« on: May 27, 2014, 10:31:05 AM »
Swaggers I need your help!
We're heading away to the Murray Rv for the winter school holidays, never having camped up there before, I've googled myself silly and am after some opinions on the 4 camping areas I've narrowed it down to.
Our requirements are
- Accessible by 2WD
- Has at least pit loos
- Allow camp fires
- Allow fishing

The 4 camps I've come up with are Christies Beach, Barmah Lakes, Edward River Bridge and Quicks Beach.

Of those which would you recommend (or not), we have 2 girls 8 and 10 (turning 11 while away) who love camping and playing in/near the water, going on walks etc.

Do you know of some other places that fit our requirements that aren't too far from Geelong (4 - 5 hours max)?

Add Ulupna Island to the mix, a great spot

Thanks GG, is Ulupna 2WD accessible? I did have it on my original list but it never made it to the short list and I can't remember why.

Yes it is, may be a little slippery in the wet but last time the family next door towed in their caravans with a commodore

Not bad at Parola Bend at the top of Mulwala weir, like any of the camps along the Murray  can get a bit slippery when wet, there is plenty to do in the area as well, Yarrawonga / Rutherglen on your doorstep. No dunnies though but there is a guy in Bundalong that will deliver a porta loo to your camp, we use them when we stay on a private property up there waterskiing, cost about $100 / 150 bucks a week from memory

Well Ulupna Is is definitely on the list now and we'll maybe try Edward Rv Bridge for the other half of the holiday.
Best thing is we can have a scout around some other sites once we're all set up.
Really looking forward to our first big trip in the CT, bought some cast iron cookware today, now to research tried and tested recipes for the dutch oven :)

Might be worth considering what the weather is going to be whilst away. Having camped often on the murray be aware that easy 2wd tracks can very quickly turn into muddy inaccessible bogholes.  These will leave your car and trailer stuck there for days/weeks or in the the case of a mate's camp, forever.  Couldn't get back into camp in a 4wd xtrail and had to return for work so just left it there and told the local cops so they wouldn't think the worst.

Echuca & East of along the Murry is easy access but the mud as said can turn the world to slip . Well worth the trip  if fishing remember to get a NSW licence as the waters edge is the start of another state . Long story but the  :police: will knock you off for practice up that way  ;D ;D
You can go your own way . Treg Up & Make Dust

Thanks guys, til we get a 4WD we just have to hope for the best weather wise, we'd never leave home otherwise!
We do have a couple of easy to get to sites as back up if the weather does turn to crap before we leave.

Thanks for the reminder about the fishing licence speewa, could make for some expensive fish fillets if you get busted!
