This afternoon I snuck over to Noosa Northshore for a surf.

I was sitting just south of the first cutting and was on my own probably about 120 metres off the beach. The surf was a solid 5ft and great fun.

A set was coming through and I was about to spin around and take a wave when a massive dolphin jumped through the front of the wave about a metre away from me in a low flat hard jump............ and if it hit me I would have been fubared. It was not your typical seaworld stuff but hard and fast by a gnarly bloody big bugger that would have been 200 kgs plus and with scars from fights all over it. The big bugger was eyeballing me as it flew past. I caught the wave and just basically stood there and watched this very powerful thing play within the wave....it was truly amazing.

I saw it once more diving through the white wash about 100m further up the beach as I was paddling back out.
Theres no real point to this post other than try and describe this experience and I am sitting here remembering this opal looking eye just rolling back as it looked at me as it flew past..........

I reckon thats a once in a life time thing.........and I am still sitting here in some sort of euphoria from it..........

Cheers Nomad.

Sounds like a great experience. What do you mean you don't carry a camera when your surfing ?:worthles:  ;D
Dolphins are majestic animals. I remember when I was young working on old mans fishing boat, we use to be surrounded by them all the time. They used to ride the waves all the way into port. Awesome.

That's awesome man, sea creatures look soo much bigger out of the water, especially when they are flying toward you.
Same thing happened to me about 12 years ago off Rottnest island. Scared the Shite out of me.
They don't look so heavy under water. They make it look so effortless and fun playing in he waves.

I went diving off the Townsville coast many years ago and a Manta Ray came swanning past us. He was in no hurry and more than happy to have us tagging along. BTW, he was huge. A rewarding experience. Woud love to have a close encounter with a wild dolphin. ;D

Great stuff Nomad.

Me and a couple of mates were snorkelling out of Saltwater Creek years ago and had a similar experience with one basically jumping over the top of us. Surreal.

I have just recently taken up Stand Up Paddling-
Never surfed in my life and happy to be flat water paddling for now anyway
While away paddling one morning in Jervis Bay NSW I sight a pod a fair way out thinking if I paddle 100 metres I should almost cross paths if they follow the same coarse
I give it everything I had and sprinted to where I thought I would meet them as soon as I thought I was in the right area I would cut left and paddle as fast as I could to stay in front of the pod a dozen or so paddles later and they are right under me with a huge one just out in front to my right swimming on his back looking at me it stayed for a few seconds then continued on
Another amazing encounter

Awesome experience...

Mine was Lennox Head, 6ft, offshore and as oily as a puddle of melted butter. A whole pod of dolphins decided to come and surf with me, all alone out there, for about half an hour...riding the waves half a metre away from my board. Epic...life changing stuff.

I love the north shore, though. As close as mortal man can come to paradise.

If ya watch the YouTube clip of Barry McGuire's (Eve of Destruction guy) most recent version of the song,"Eve 2012" or something, there's a great spot in the clip where a dolphin interacts with a dog in a boat.

Good follow up song too, and if knew how to do it, I'd upload it, but alas, I am but a dumb ar$e mower man.

A few years back Hubby and I were holidaying on Heron Island. One beautiful clear morning we were sitting in the shallows cooling off just watching all the beautiful little fish swimming by, when we caught sight of three Rays following one another swimming in our direction.  Thought we'd have to move, but no they got within a metre and then swam round us.  Amazing sight and one of my most fav holidays ever.
