Camping Over Christmas
« on: December 01, 2013, 10:36:35 PM »
We are camping over Christmas for 2 weeks and have never been camping this long before, let alone over Christmas time. I'm not sure what we will be eating Christmas day but guess it will be hot, so I intend to keep it simple. I bought some solar fairy lights and a small fibre optic tree for the table. Not sure at this stage how we are going to sneak the presents along with us, as we're fairly tight for space on a normal camping trip. I was wondering if anyone could share some ideas on food, decorations and general ideas on how to make camping over Christmas simple but fun? Thanks everyone! :D

Hi kiwi_camper
My wife organised a whole heap of Xmas craft in packs that the kids could make up for our campsite including tinsel to wrap around tent poles and flashing led lights for the tree and awning
As for sneaking the presents along last year was the first year camping away and we had a surfboard of all things to hide I just wrapped everything in rubbish bags and laid them under the caravan behind the draft skirt until Xmas eve
My kids call me "Justin" because I pack that much Shite "Justin case" so all those extra bags were just dads stuff
Worked for me

Cheers Michael

Don't pack the presents with Xmas paper, or tell the kids they'll get their presents when you get back and just do what you do at home, only real difference with camping for two weeks or being at home for two weeks is your somewhere other than home, still have all the same needs, but having more fun :cup:

First up how old are the kids,Luckily we only had one child to think of,Get them involved with camp site decorating " Find a real tree to be the token christmas tree" Dont forget to take the saw and a drum to put it in  though !. ;D [ disclaimer I do not condone cutting down trees just to let children enjoy christmas ]
Big ticket items you can try the o'l " Santa knew that we were going to be camping and only gave us the smaller presents and left the bigger ones at our house, because the big ones wouldnt fit in the camper on the way home ..
Smaller presents decorations etc as others have said bagged / boxed buried under the normal camper gear though we had ours still wrapped in chrissy paper for the day.
For the tucker its not hard to smash up a couple of BBQed budgies and take a ham with some salads, desserts ice cream is the hardest without a freezer but custard and pudding works .

Due to the extra gear aquired while away at xmas from Santa and other relatives we carry a roof top bag on the camper which becomes the santa sack. All the goodies that are ok to stay out are stored in the sack during the day and night which frees up a lot of room in the camper. Its usually stored underneath the camper when not in use

Ham and cheese croissants for breaky, prawns go alright, peel and vacuum seal before leaving home, Ham and salad. As for the presents don't try to put bikes together Christmas Eve after a few drinks

How to make Christmas Fun?

Booze, good company (or no company), good food, a smokey fire (it's a must), and somewhere to lie down when it gets hot, somewhere to swim when it gets hot, and some views for mum and dad for when the kids are off "exploring".  Everything else is Xmas Hype that really isn't required.

I've done roast lamb with the works and Christmas pudding with custard over the fire. We like to run away from the Christmas craziness and make it about our family.

Vacuum seal cold meats from the deli (ham, pork, turkey, chicken etc), get a Shed load of prawns on Xmas eve, salads and a Xmas pud with brandy custard. Make sure there is enough alcohol and you'll be set.
Take a couple of small gifts for the kids and tell them Santa delivered the rest to your house. That way the kids get something to open when they get home to take their minds off the post camping blues (works for mine)
Decorate the camp site with solar lights, tinsel etc. the kids won't notice anything different.
Xmas is about family being together, I think you guys will have one of your best yet, you can't beat camping at Xmas.

Thanks everyone for your great suggestions. Given we've never camped over Christmas time I didn't want to miss/forget anything important. You're right that Christmas is Christmas no matter where you are and as long as I'm with hubby and the kids all the other hype doesn't matter (a wine or 5 also helps LOL). To be honest, we are combining two of the things we love the most- so it's going to be a great Christmas.

Merry Christmas in advance everyone! :D

After this first one, you'll want to do it more often.  Camping Christmas' are the best I've ever had.  Don't forget a few decorations to make it look convincing or go the whole hog with lights and tinsel like the Xmas department.  My parents used to give us camping things when we camped over Xmas ... head light, new bedding, a good hat, "water" boots ... We loved it.

Still Do.
