Barossa / Clare Valley advice wanted - not camping though.

Hiya,

We've got an opportunity to be in Adelaide in early September to coincide with some other work stuff.  We're thinking about a quiet weekend in the Barossa - not camping as we are flying in - but we don't know the area very well.  Any locals got any tips on which town or a nice location to stay? We prefer self contained house type accommo or maybe a B&B where they leave you alone. Close to a couple of wineries and somewhere to get an evening meal.  Maybe a weekend market if there is something interesting to see. We don't need to go to 30 wineries or anywhere with big crowds, but there seems to be lots of little towns and we don't know one from the other.  Or is Clare Valley better?

my pick would be the Barrosa, quite a few other things to see and do other than the wineries compared to the Clare Valley

Yep, will hire a car in radelaide.
So, any tips on local towns would be great.

there are lots of places to stay in the barossa, and nothing is more than about half an hour away. Can you give an idea of budget?

Tanunda is a great little town just next door to the Barossa.

We usually do camping overnighters in the Barossa so cant help with accommodation and don't drink wine much so cant help there either.

Last time we found a great look out with large sculptures but don't remember the name of it. It was on the eastern side of the valley.

That's great. All of these things sound good. Are they close by, and therefore it doesnt matter where you stay?

The main towns are Tanunda, Nuriootpa and Angaston  and are about 10 minutes away from each other so it doesnt matter where you stay.

And everything except the pub shuts at 5:30  even on Saturday night

Hi Stozz, Barossa is definately the pick. I would stay in either Angaston or Lyndoch, both towns are a little nicer (Traditional old country towns) where as Tanunda is a little more populated check out here http://www.stayz.com.au/accommodation/sa/barossa/barossa-valley?view=list&page=1  for accomodation..We live about an hour from Barossa in the Adelaide Hills .Cheers  Michael
