New to MySwag
« on: April 06, 2013, 11:23:03 PM »
Hi all, I have been reading the posts for a while and have decided to jump into my first forum...

We have both a 4x4 and a CT, one seems more popular than the other around here!  Firstly the car, yes I bought a Jeep... Or more to the point my wife did. It's a Wrangler Unlimited and I have to say we are very happy. It's robust and for $40k you don't have many serious 4x4's to chose from at that price. We live in FNQ so I wanted something to do the Cape (more on that in a minute). Behind the Jeep is the Trackabout Deluxe Tourer. I know why everyone rates them here, it has been faultless and we love it. All in all its a great setup that gets us to anywhere we want to go.

Anyway, one of my main reasons for joining the forum is to try and join in on a Cape Trip. I have a friend who has been on a few MySwag trips and it sounds like a fun and safe way to do your first trip up there. How far out are they arranged and when is the next trip planned?

Keen to plan ahead so that I can make sure both the car and trailer are up to the task... Any advice on minimum car and trailer requirements for the trip?

I look forward to some tips, debates and hopefully a few trips.

Cheers

Greg

Welcome to "The Show" Greg.

It sounds like you have a very capable set up in the Jeep & Trackie. While McGirr is taking a break from organising Cape tours [not for long we hope!!] there are always smaller groups/individuals heading for the cape. You might work out when you can get up there & start a thread "Heading to the cape   /   /   " and see what replies come in.

As for requirements, again check out some of the previous cape threads but good tyres [AT or Muddies], snorkel, diff breathers and a mechanically sound tug should do the trick.I would make sure the bearings are good on the CT [and take a spare set].

The cape can be wild early in the season - May-June or mild in July-August, it really depends on the season. There are by-passes around Gunshot, Nolan's etc or you can still experience the cape from the Developmental Road.. it all depends on you.

Good luck on the planning,

Regards

Thanks Gents

We are in the Northern Beaches of Cairns... The great thing about this area is you can go an hour in any direction and be a world away. No shortage of great day or overnight spots to explore...

Diff breathers, missed those off my list. The Jeep is good out of the blocks but are taking steps to make it stronger.. So far only front and back bar with a set of Lightforce  Spotties. Snorkel, lift and bigger tyres next on the list.

I am thinking about using the standard jeep wheels on the Trailer, anyone have concerns with those wheel adapters/spacers. I know they are illegal on cars, are they ok on trailers or should I change the hub if I want to go this far?

Hi  FalcOn, (Greg)

Welcome to the forum, a great choice of camp trailer,(not sure about choice of tug ;D)
It is great to see another FNQ member joining up, we do live in a wonderful part of Australia. The FNQ members have the odd get-together every now and then and you are more than welcome to join in, Christmas at Woodleigh Station the odd dinner get-together or camp away.
If you want , stick your name and details up on the below link and Teabag can add you to the list. When ever we have a planned get-together Teabag will send out a bulk PM.

G'day & Welcome Greg.

A Jeep and a Trackabout; you're ready to go anywhere (that is not paved ).

We'll have to do something about another forum Cape Trip, maybe a few smaller groups or something.
