Proof of Identification, How Times Have Changed!!
« on: August 23, 2012, 01:37:26 PM »
Hi All,
I went to transfer the registration for the caravan I just purchased and did I get surprise ???
As I have never held a drivers licence for medical reasons, it appears that any ID I`ve had over the years to get married twice, apply for positions, home loans, business loans, rent properties, open bank accounts and be a Centrelink customer as well as phone accounts etc. is not good enough for the RTA.

I can understand a licence requirements being different, but just to register a caravan >:(
I`ve spoken to the RTA and I must have my Birth Certificate ( I only have an extract which is no longer recognised )and 2 Marriage Certificates at a cost of $65.00 each, have to pay a late transfer fee of $101 as it will take about 3 weeks to get the certificates. And into the bargain I can be fined if we are pulled over for not having the rego transferred. :'(

RTA said get a photo ID but I NEED all those certificates as well, to get that ???

Cheers, Robyn.

I believe your given 3 months to transfer rego.

My dad had an inheritance chq from the UK in the early 90's for many 10's of thouands in his name, but for some reason I cant remember, the credit union in the shire wanted photo ID to bank it into an account in his name, which is the same name as on the chq (there's no other family in Australia with our surname) and the same name on his Eftpos card... WTF? My parents had banked with them (at another branch which had closed) for over a decade, alas mum did most of the financial gig at the time.

Massive dummy spit, and wanted to close all his accounts on the spot (which was quite a $$ too!) for ****ing him around... but they wanted Photo ID to do that, which made things much better  :'(

He didnt hold a license since losing his license due to medical reasons... And thats pretty much the only photo ID you can have.
They told him he could get some 'special' photo ID through I think it was Centerlink (usually for pensioners)...
But get this, he could still use his Eftpos card to do his normal banking.

He couldnt go open an account at another bank either - needed ID...

Lost,
Paperwork says 14 days in NSW or a late application fee of at least $101 will be charged !

WilSurf, It is necessary to have those documents in order to apply for a passport ???

In NSW we have the proof of age card. Generally used by people of legal drinking age who don't have a drivers license. Probably need a full birth certificate to get one though.

Hi Bobnrob,

I have all sorts of ID that fits list 2 but this is not good enough as it states at the end of list 2 " in all cases the initials on List 2 document must match your full name as shown in List 1 document"

As I do not have any List 1 documents, I am required to obtain my original birth certificate and both marriage certificates to provide the relevant name changes. Certificates issued at time of marriage, the extract of my birth certificate, bank accounts, medicare, centrelink etc count for zilch in the RTA`s eyes.

Really strange that I`ve lived 65years and never had a problem with bureaucracy before, now all this just because I want to transfer a caravan into my name ???

Robyn.

I dont think that it's going to improve either Robyn.  While you're there you might as well get yourself an 18+ card, I'm sure you'll find a calling for it.

The 18+ card is what you get if you need photo ID but do not have a drivers license.

Know your pain.
had to get my mother to signs document a coupling years ago.
She has different surname to me.having remarried when I was a kid.

Australian beauracracy did not recongise why she would have a different name to me.
had to then go on to supply her birth certificate, (showing maiden name) marriage certificate showing her  name at time I was born, divorce certificate, 2nd marriage certificate showing current name.
Why do people ask "What the hell were you thinking?"
Obviously I was thinking I was going to get away with it and not have to explain it....
