McHitch Trailer Hitch!
« on: June 17, 2013, 05:49:22 PM »
Hi Swaggers,

Looking at getting a McHitch for the CT as I'm not happy with the one that is on there! Fitting an electric break controller soon as the breaks are good to go. I like the option of the hand break as well.

I had a look at McHitch and they do a hitch that doesn't have the mechanical over-ride option but has the hand break, like this:

http://mchitch.com.au/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=11&products_id=36

Then they do one which has both the over-ride option as well as the hand break, like this:

http://mchitch.com.au/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=11&products_id=37

I like the idea of having the over-ride option incase the electric break controller has a problem and I need to get home from a trip away. Is there an issue using both trailer breaking systems at the same time?

Anyone got any ideas on which one to get? Anyone have the hitch that has the over-ride breaks as well as the hand break?

Cheers

Strvy

Starvy- I got the one with the override on my GIC EXTREME Offroad for the exact reason u said- if electric fails - still have brakes. Not much difference in price and you already have hand brake so why worry about another one. Hope that helps ur decision making.

Thanks for the reply!

Did you have any issues with fitting the new McHitch? IE the ftting of the new bolts into the original holes?

Strvy,

You would need the handbrake to be changed in order for the mech override to work . it needs to push on the mechanism to put tension on the cable and thus pull the brakes on. there will also be a small amount or slap or back and forth even with the collar locked over.

My advice is to just get a hitch that is used with elec brakes and leave the mech override alone. as you will need to spend more $$$ to use the feature and really do you need a back up braking system that uses the handbrake feature of the elec brakes. I would hate to be using that mech as a general brake system . it was not designed for that purpose.

This is the base plate and handbrake for use with mech override.

Thanks Jet for your thoughts!!

I just like the idea of having a back up (just like my electrical setup).

I understand the 'slap or back and forth' comment, and yes I get that now, but thats with out the electric brakes.

The gap on the McHitch when the collar is down is WAY smaller than on the hitch I have now!

Just so you know Starvy, I have disabled the mechanical override with the latch cable tied down as it will only be if the electric brakes fail. I won't run both of them as it will make the brakes play up I believe. So the only time I will cut that cable tie is if the electric brakes are in fault
