In car ipad holder
« on: February 06, 2012, 04:39:22 PM »
G'day all, we had a dvd player mounted on the head rests to keep the little angels  ;D entertained while on the road but the dvd gave up the ghost on the last trip and the carry-on from the back seat was unbearable. So in my search for a replacement i had a thought about mounting our ipad on the head rest. I came across this http://www.kogan.com.au/shop/wallee-headrest-mount-white/ which also needs the cover to go with it http://www.kogan.com.au/shop/wallee-ipad2-case-black/ and wondered if anybody has this unit or something similar that can be mounted to the headrest, or what other systems people use to keep the little cherubs amused so they arrive alive at the destination  >:D

We use these.
They are fantastic. Son can watch one movie while daughter watches another.
Alternatively they can watch the same thing or play games with or against eachother.

Headsets are invaluable as we can enjoy the drive in peace............ :D or listen to our tunes  ::)
Really easy to install, permanently in the car, and they have a zip face to hide them from opportunists.
We have downloaded a heap of movies onto USB sticks, so we don't even have to take the DVD's any more.

Best of luck with whatever you go with.

Hey Jacko,

Did you end up getting one of the Kogan Mounts?

What is your opinion, do they bounce around?

I've also seen this one that looks a little sturdier.

Also been looking into headphone connection. Looks like the iPad can only support one Bluetooth headphone set so might need a splitter cable.

Does anyone else using an iPad headrest setup?

Grant

G'day Grant, I didn't end up getting the Kogan headrest mount, instead went for one of these .They work ok if your sitting directly infront of it, but the kid in the middle had to lean over to see the screen, still contemplating getting something else so its in the middle.

I am using a Ram Mount system, on the console, for iPad in the front seat. Could probably install on the centre console in the back. Very solid mount, and easy to adjust for your own use...
I will post a photo later.

I'll second the RAM mount. I use one and find it great. Good quality flexible mounts.

I've kept it pretty simple. I have a folio case (leather) which I unfold and then use a couple of straps to attach it to either of the front seat headrests. A bit of a faff, but works a treat and doesn't move around at all. Cheap but effective.

Anyone have a model number/type of the ram mounts that they have used? Seems lots of models to choose from.

What about some gaffer tape around the headrest?

I wonder if iPads et al are really necessary? I have two boys 2 and 4 and we have a great time talking and playing games while driving...we listen to music as well and do silly voices.....surely there is more to a trip away with the family than each individual tuning out on your own entertainment system?

Try putting a third kid in the middle seat in the back, with no room and see how long the you can handle the talking/fighting on a 4 hr drive. A little bit of peace and quiet goes a long way.

Jacko,
My RAM mount came as a couple of different pieces, the IPad cradle (RAM-HOL-AP8U),
and the base and swiveling arm, (I think mine is RAM-101U-D).

I find this setup is good, although not cheap once you get the couple of different components. The mount has to be screwed/bolted to a console or something solid, which you mightn't want to do, or they do have some other options such as suction cups. They are a component system so the iPad cradle will work on any of their mounting arms. I think they might have ones that attach to seat rails too?
