Camper trailer insurance
« on: March 26, 2012, 07:49:32 PM »
Hi guy's  Just got a letter from our insurer (MHIA).Just been informed that due to a change in there underwriting criteria our policy will expire in 3 week's. I'm looking for help,to find another insurer, which will also cover your contents of your trailer ,once it is put up. Any help greatfully appreciated.ROB

Put transportable stuff on your house insurance, and then keep everything else in locked storage in the camper. I was going to go with MHIA for same reason as you, covered contents in canvas, but got told they were "in negotiation" with underwriters... Good luck in your quest, I found no one...

When we bourght the camper 12 month's ago MHIA was the only one i found who covered contents,it wasn't cheap, but had every thing covered.Because we are selling every thing up and renting the house out, we will not have any house contents insurance

We picked up our Jayco today and went with RAC insurance (WA) was not much more than CIL but covered medical emergencies when more than 100 km from home.

Items inside of value will be covered under home insurance.

What else can you - collapse it down and lock it whenever away from camp?

NRMA will cover your canvas awning and contents.  They have $1000 in their main policy and then you can pay for extra contents.

Maybe some how put a safe in the camper for small valuables

Another thing to check is if the insurance company will ship the camper back to your place of residence if the camper breaks down.

We are with RAA (adelaide version of NRMA) and we have got complete cover, they took heaps of details about the kitchen and size of tent/annex and whether we had annex walls etc.

So it comes down to risk..

How many people here have made a claim for stuff stolen from under the canvas? I've not heard of one, not saying they havent, but not that insurance companies need a reason to shaft people, but it just Shits me how they make it as impossible for humans as they possibly can, and expect people to respect them..

There's heaps of info on various insurers here. Just do a search on camper insurance. I'm with CIL as I used LOST's list of questions from this thread - http://myswag.org/forum/index.php?topic=2970.25 - and added a few more of my own and personally, I felt they provided the best overall coverage offroad and seemed to be the only ones to cover all costs to repair and return home if damaged remotely inc multiple shipping costs if needed. General excess was $200 moving to $400 if shipping is required from a remote location and they cover contents within the canvas as long as it's reasonably secured (ie padlock and confirmed this via email). That being said, we don't leave valuables in the camper itself anyway.
Re contents - check the PDS's. Most companies cover the first $1000 (NRMA, CIL etc) and offer extra contents options if you want to take it out.

Good Luck!
