Hi from Balhannah, SA
« on: February 13, 2012, 02:10:29 PM »
Hi MySwag and other friends,
we recently bought a Jayco Dove Outback and have been caravanning twice.  We absolutely love getting away from it all and just seeing the countryside and chilling out.  We would like to try freecamping but are a little concerned regarding our safety.  Anyone able to recommend good spots within SA, Melbourne and environs.  We would like to get back to the High Country in Victoria too.  So far we have only used caravan parks because of getting used to using the van etc.
Cheers
Dave and Sue

Welcome Dave and Sue.

There are plenty of swaggers out there who will give you plenty of advise on where to freecamp when you are planning to hit the road.  Just give them a fair bit of notice when you plan to depart and a general area and sit back and real the replies ;D.

Heaps of reports in the Trips Section as a guide.  You have plenty of SA members over there too who will undoubtedly invite you along on their escapades.  A good way to see new places and make new friends.

There are so many people on the road now that there will usually be someone else around doing the same thing when you free camp.  I dont think you need to have much concern re your personal safety, more concern with general road safety and other road users.

Have a great time here.

Hi Mace,
thanks for the response.  When we plan the next trip will do as you have suggested.  This looks like a great site, and am interested in what people do and have to say.
Cheers
Sue

Hi Dave & Sue, welcome to My Swag.
Free camping is great when you get used to it. As already said you are very rarley on your own.
95% of our camps would be free.

Hi Dave and Sue,

Welcome to the forum - great to see another South Aussie on here - we are growing in numbers!!

Are you able to make it to the upcoming SA MySwag meet over the March long weekend - you can meet some fellow SA swaggers there!

Cheers,

JKohn.

G'Day Dave & Sue,

We used to be caravan park regulars, since having the Camper we have only been into parks a couple of times.  Freecamping is heaps more enjoyable.

Welcome Dave & Sue,
We have a Swan that we purchased last year and love both getting away in it, and also the never ending modifications that we carry out.
We live fairly near you and I work in the hills - Mt Barker.
Looking forward to checking out some pics of your camper....
regards, Paul

Hey Guys,
thanks for all the great replies, especially those who live near us in Balhannah.  Will have to work out how to load pics once we have some more of our Dove, which is a great little camper.
Really pleased to get the reassurance about the free camping and looking forward to trying it out.  We also have done some additions to our Dove, rather than modifications at this point but it's extremely comfortable and great to tow.  Unfortunately, issues with our tow vehicle have seen us purchase a new Nissan Navarra so hopefully this will be good for the long haul now.  To JKohn, thanks for your response too.  Unfortunately, we can't make it over the March long weekend;  we had already booked a trip to Victoria and are looking forward to getting away for a few days again.
Cheers
Sue

Welcome D&S, our last freecamp at Port Parham was virtually full. Mostly interstate big rigs from or to W.A.

There is almost always someone nearby.

P.S. You don't have any attachment to the Leahey family do you??

G'day & Welcome.

We held our inaugural MySwag National Meet in Wilmington last October, got to meet a lot of fantastic members from SA, plus many others from the eastern states. I cannot recommend highly enough getting along to the forum trips.
