Insurance on a home made camper

Hi just in the process of ringing around for insurance on my camper trailer and have found most will not insure it without a valuation, Racq whould not insure it at all.
Still have a few more to call but just interested in what other out there had found.

Ps i have had a valuation done and it came in at $19100

reol950, as far as I know, insurance companies will need a compliance plate before they will cover your camper ?

that makes sense. .. how much do you insure it for if you don't know how much it is worth.. and if it hasn't come from a manufacturer, how do you get a valid price that isn't jacked up by the owner.

is it just being insured as a box trailer?

Silvo, what you just said makes alot of sense.

Just speaking with CIL, and posted the last post up while on hold with RACV. CIL mentioned that any caravan sales places will be happy to do this. Now to call them and find out how much they charge.

I wondered why an independant valuation was needed, along with photos.

RACV would not have a bar of it, even after letting them know I am a qualified boilermaker, pressure welder and senior welding inspector.

CGU rudely cut me off after asking me if I had any other policies with them, or part of a financial institution that was part of CGU. I answer no, so they cut me off. RUDE PRICKS  ???

CIL were really good, and gave me a quote on my estimated value.

I can definitely recommend CIL.  I am an insurance broker and only use CIL.  If you have a specialist trailer, use a specialist insurer.  Same goes with boats, amazing how many people will insure their boat with a cheap direct insurer instead of Club Marine.

The valuation enables the insurer to set a value as opposed to the owner deciding on their own value as noted above.

Hey guys i will recommend 4x4 Australia (DGA ) Insurance. they are fantastic. they will find you cover with out an issue the best thing is they cover you for complete off road with free on road insurance. you can take your car and trailer any where in australia on and off road Not even on marked maps as most insurances only cover for roads on maps and its full cover everywhere....plus they were alot cheaper than anyone else we have tried to get insurance through we have 2 4x4.s and our trailer with them.

Another vote for CIL.
Homemade trailer with chassis number from rego, photos of trailer/tent set up, gave them a replacement value of 12k and they did not baulk at it, pay monthly , no problems, paying about $320/year from memory.
Well worth the peace of mind.

All very invaluable information.  Gave our local caravan sales place a call, and they will provide a written valuation for FREE.  If this bloody rain stops, I'll probably take it in tomorrow.

I've just completed a custom offroad trailer build with a twist. The body of the trailer is a tub off a ML triton and to which I've made a frame and mounted a rooftop tent to.

I'm currently insured with AAMI (triton and camper trailer) and when I called to insure my latest addition they said because under the brand name on the rego saying homemade, under their guidelines it couldn't be insured. They gave me the number of CIL who they said could help.

So I call CIL and all was going well and after sending them pics of the build as requested I'm given more bad news ???

Because it's a rooftop tent and not an actual camper tent again their guidelines can't cover me >:(

I know this is an odd build so my question is has anybody been in a similar situation in regards to trying to insure a rooftop tent on a trailer ???

Looks like it'll be doing the Easter travels uninsured :'(

try telling them the tent is home made and it is your own design of a camper tent... What can they say then ?

That's hard as they needed pictures and the tent has tigerz11 signage all over it. I can only assume the pictures were needed as proof so they knew I wasn't just insuring anything

I built my own trailer and put a Camel Group tent on it.
Went to get insurance through Suncorp, they asked who made it, I said "Homemade". Same deal "cant insure homemade" then they asked who made canvas tent. So now its insured as being made by Camel Group.

An old boaties trick to get around homemade boat insurance issues was to register a business name and then build the first 'prototype' boat.  Get it insured and then decide that the boat building business is not for you and close the 'business'...

RACT in Tassie insure home made campers and canvas no problems, you simply tell them the amount you want to insure it for.

I considered this Geoff but again it's rego'd under homemade so making life difficult.

Will have to try other insurers next week and just try and get it classed as a box trailer.

What sort of value are you looking at to insure it for?

Maybe self insurance is an option, i.e. If you are going to be charged $500 premium a year, you put this a side in case the worse ever happens. Remember the insurance you are talking about is for replacing the asset only. Legal liability will already be covered under the registration for the trailer.

guys:

thanks to your recommendations above I gave CIL a call for coverage for our 80 series trailer.

being home made... NRMA wouldn't touch it.

A quick and very helpful chat (on a Saturday morning no less) to CIL and sorted. (and we chatted about our dogs too)

Insured for 5k. at a cost of $15 a month.

We couldn't be happier.
