I guess everyone has a story to tell, but its entirely up to you.

We choose to update every 4 years as we figure the repayments vs cost of repairs etc pretty much balances out over time, but this way we spend our lives driving a new car....
A bonus in my mind.

Our last tug we kept for 9 years due to having tinlids and not having the finance to  buy a new one.
Don't reckon we saved any money, but didn't have the obligation of repayments.

Either way a car is an EXPENSE.
You know the old saying "If its got t1t$ or wheels it will cost you money...."
(although I heard the other day - if it fornicates, flys or floats its gonna cost a lot of money......)

Cheers

Like Brian, we haven't updated our 2 cars for a long time due to other expenses (building a house without loaning to much, kids in private school, wife working part time to try to be a semi stay at home mum......, kids playing sport, sport and more blooody sport.....).

Pajero ('94 model) bought in 2000 with 200000km on the clock for $18000. Now at over 450000km and still reliable enough to (over)load it up and do a 10000km round trip across the country twice in the last 3 years . Just normal (self) maintenance, plus a clutch and the odd set of tyres, brakes etc. Estimate probably spent about $7000 in maintenance/repair running costs. So assuming it's worth $0 today it has cost about $2000/year, plus rego, insurance, fuel. Or $40/week.

Laser ('94) bought in about 2006 with about 100000km on the clock for $3000. Now at about 280000km and still going strong. It just keeps going as well (even the battery had it's 8th birthday this month :cup:). Estimate has cost about $4000 in maintenance over these 8 years. Again assume it is worth $0 today it has cost us less than $1000/year, or $20/week, plus rego, insurance, fuel.

Off course the downside is we have 2 shyty old cars worth nothing  :'( that have no safety features except the the steering wheel is connected to the front wheels and the brakes work, but what could we replace them with that would cost less than $60/week

As Brij mentioned in passing the older cars have much less in the safety stakes.  This may make a difference to your choice.  Think about ABS, air bags etc.
