heat shrink....pls be gentle
« on: July 28, 2013, 02:48:02 AM »
Hi,
So, I didnt really want to venture into the electrical section, I havent been through there for a while and its not the same as some other sections......

Anyway, quick question,

How much will heat shrink 'shrink' down.

My gear lever on the old bus is rusty and looking crappy, I sanded it back with some fine grit paper and because the paint peeled off the metal gear lever it was not exactly the best,
I was thinking best fix to make it look half decent is to heat shrink some heat shrink on there.
Plus they have it in a fancy blue colour which will suit the old bus,

But its rather expensive and they only have the blue in a large size, so, how much will it shrink down to?

Its either that or a standard black or red in colour? or I'll have to brush on some paint.........

Why do people ask "What the hell were you thinking?"
Obviously I was thinking I was going to get away with it and not have to explain it....

Good morning Cruisindub,

Generally heatshrink will reduce to about 50% of its original size, I.e 50mm will become 25mm

Cheers, marschy

You have got to be kidding me.  It isn't that bad.

Generally heatshrink will reduce to about 50% of its original size, I.e 50mm will become 25mm

Actually it is 30%, so 50mm heatshrink will go down to 17mm.

Thanks guys, I think the cool blue colour heat shrink on my gear lever is the way. Just that little bit more of a 'mod' on the old girl....  8)

You have got to be kidding me.  It isn't that bad.

Nah, its not all that bad.  >:D

Wasnt sure if I'd be shot down in flames by the electrical gurus for thinking about the heat shrink as quick cover up for a rusty shaft.

But, 50mm down to 17mm is going to work nicely.

Good to know for future, 30% of its original size,   :D

Hi mate, Your up early?
This link will probably explain a little easier than I could.   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat-shrink_tubing

I'm planning to unscrew the gear knob, slide that over the metal gear lever and under the sock at the bottom, gently heat it up, make a nice cover over the top of the crappy looking shaft.

Why do people ask "What the hell were you thinking?"
Obviously I was thinking I was going to get away with it and not have to explain it....

Actually, if I'd read the 'wiki' link first, and presuming its genuinely correct, it would have told me there........     :-[   :-[

Hi Cruisindub
How do you mean early, I have woken at 4 am every day for about the last 30 years.  When I was a jackaroo we had to get up ay about this time to brush and feed the horses, ready for the days work, and my body clock has always stayed the same.  I normally do not get on the computer until later, as I like being up and having a coffee, as well as patting my mafe and letting him (blue heeler) know that it is going to be a good day.  I will check the link, thankyou.
Regards
Tjupurla

You can't contradict me unless I post in the electrical section, besides I responded first. LOL

If you click on the link below it will show a range of heat shrink products. If you then go into the different products there are tables that show the pre and post shrunk diameters.

Husband tells me heat shrink should have 2 numbers on it eg) 56/16 and it will shrink down to the lower number.

So starts at 56mm diameter and will shrink down to 16mm.

The good stuff has that - the cheap stuff doesn't.
