Feral Goats
« on: March 24, 2013, 11:12:48 AM »
Hi guys,

We just came back to Adelaide from Brisbane and I have never seen so many feral goats in central west NSW. In fact there were foxes, hares, emus and roos everywhere, even during the day. The local authorities were even warning people in towns to be careful.

We could barely drive faster than 80km/h as there were so many goats and roos on the roads and on the roadside. Eventually our number came up and we ploughed into one.

Take care at the moment on the roads folks out west NSW, they are literally everywhere.

Cheers, Paul

Rains will do that. I remember driving the nullabor in the early 90's and there were about 15 rabbits between every set of white marker posts and that was on the road not the shoulder. We were averaging about 3-5 hits  per set of posts just driving straight down our side of the road, it was insane.

Up in the hut on the mountain at Warraweena Homestead there were "logs" from shooters on the walls

'shot 25 goats today before lunch', and stuff like that. I thought it was exaggerating, but after seeing how many were round, even I could have shot one.

very true........specially the young ones :)

The cockies in NSW make a few bucks mustering them, not too many get shot these days.......they are actually worth a buck now.

There are literally thousands of the things just out of Cobar. I thought there was a lot when we went through in 2010 but when we passed through in 2012 there seemed to be twice as many.

yep I saw thousands in western NSW and SA a few weeks ago. Goats seem smarter than roos - they respond to a vehicle horn on approach

Hi,
   goat meat is very tasty.
I had my first goat curry when I was in a military hospital surgery ward with a bunch of Gurkhas.
Every day the smell of their curries vs my meat and 3 veg taunted me till I asked if I could try their curries instead.
I've loved curries and goat ever since.
cheers

I find goat has too many bones. I am a lazy eater and do not like eating around bones.

Just did broken hill to Dubbo and there are still hundreds. They do seem to respond to horns (pardon the pun) but at one point I did come to a complete stop to get by

Years ago I worked on a station in Cobar & they just started mustering the ferals  & herding them then.. so not really surprised if they have run wild again.
The kids are great eating...

Just my experience when I have had goat. The family that served us a Goat Curry also said they find it more boney that other meats.
