We have never been big summer campers as I love the cold, but are looking at doing a few short trips straight after xmas and during January (going to make the CT earn its keep :D). Hoping that you guys can give us some ideas!

Criteria

*2 of the trips we will be going with first time campers so as not to scare them off toilets and showers are probably required. But not a fan of big caravan tourist parks. Power not required.

*1 of the trips is just me and bunyip so the above is not a concern.

*Dog Friendly (Sir Lancelot may disown us if we leave him at home again)

*Bush not Beach but near a river so the kids can cool off would be great.

*No further than 3 to 4 hours from Sydney

*Turon Gates and Ferndale are off the list as I could imagine that they would be way over crowded at that time of the year. Woolondilly river station is under consideration for one of them.

*Does anyone have any other suggestions?

so, riverside bush camping - but with showers and toilets - within one tank of fuel of Sydney; summer holidays... and no crowds?! Do you want fries with that?  ;D

Knorrit flat is a great spot but would be 4hrs from Sydney, check out the SF website as they allow dogs, riverwood downs near Gloucester also allows dogs,

Have you considered lake hume? Its about 500km from sydney and has a heap of great places where you can whack up a tent and camp. toilets etc etc. It gets busy but there is enough land to keep everyone happy.

Dog friendly, one tank of fuel from sydney and still close enough to any towns should you require anything. Even in the middle of summer you can always find a decent spot.

Might not fit all of the criteria, but Trial Bay Goal at South-West Rocks might suit. A beautiful spot, on the coast/beach, but it is a calm inside bay so beautiful for a safe paddle.

Go to Tumut. 4 hours down the hwy and endless choices from there. Camp by the river, Blowering dam, Jounama Creek, Tantangara Dam, 3 mile dam, ravine in the KNP on the Yarrongobilly. Clear sky's awesome water quality with no blue green algae worries.

Heaven on earth and plenty of options once you get there.

You mean you cannot hear Bunyip snore, which is really saying something.

Burrinjuck Waters State Park.
It's a caravan park but the camping is fairly open form. Good clean toilets/showers, kiosk with fuel, ice, tackle, booze, food, etc. Water level is likely to remain high again this summer. On the downside, lake can be prone to algae.
Kids can feed kangaroos and birds, fishing, swimming, etc. Family Favourite. The cabins are pretty cheap if you don't want to camp, but need to be booked well n advance.
