Happy New Year

Hi,
Kids went to NYE fireworks and were thrilled to see some Fairy penguins come out of the waves and up the beach to the dunes.
Within 4km of the GPO.

I've a 3m x 3m awning on the 80,
Had it about 10 years now, ot will fit 2x swags under it, which is great for the short off track camps.
The bag has deteriorated, started to rip.
The awning, poles and the rest of it is in good condition.
Paid around $350 for, so I went looking for a replace bag, couldn't fund one, heaps of 2.7, 2.4 bags, well I found one, for $49, + postage, about 12 bucks. It seems to be made of a good quality vinyl.
I'm pretty happy with that.

Remember this setup.
Seems like a life time ago .
I had this set as a Paper boy, in Ballina when I was 13.
I had to have it, it was 3.30am when I started my run after rolling about 60 or papers.
There were 6 of us paper boys, that delivered papers, 5 days a week, before I caught the bus to school to Lismore.
It was a bonus to get asked to do a Saturday. Started a little later, then we would do the rounds to the pubs, the regulars would be there, placing bets on the nags or dish lickers.
Some would tip ya, a big score was a dollar tip. :)
School days, Rain, storms, rain coats put on.
Coming home, wet shoes, drenched, have breakfast, catch the bus.
:)

I still have one of those dynomo's and I think the rear light as well. I went from that dynamo to a Sanyo one that ran on the rear tyre and less drag. The only problem was blowing front light bulbs when sitting in behind trucks at 100Kmh. ;D

Hi
A long time ago I put 2 on my bike.
The mission:
Ride down one of the Mt Wellington walking tracks.
At night.
With a head torch powered by the two dynamos.
The outcome:
They went in and out of phase, so the lamp flashed on and off, really bright but failed at a critical point in a bend at speed.
Front wheel dropped between the planks of a small bridge and I sailed over the bars, nose first into the gravel track.
Not a pretty sight for the next week or so .
Cheers

Have you done a Google search any time in the last couple of months? If so, the first result at the top of the page will have been an AI answer. If you believe AI will get it right, that's fine! :-\ If not, it's annoying >:(

Well, this happened today.
Fysh bought herself a near new vehicle.
2021 MUX, 3.0lt turbo.
Paid $40k, 54K km's, still has new car warranty, it has a towing pack, AndersonPlug, Connection for a rear camera on a van, :)
How crazy is this, It can tow 3500kg.
My 91 80 series can only tow up 2500kg.
Looks like we might be getting a bigger caravan, than a New Age Little Joey that I was recommended in my other thread.
:)
We'll still have the 80 for remote 2-3 night camps.
Happy Days,
Hey BullFrog, we'll catchya some where soon.

Looks a good buy @Hairs, the Isuzu MUX are a good honest vehicle. Not sure I would go towing a 3.5t van but should tow a 2.7 to 3t van nicely.

Thank you to everyone who replied to my post, RE a Small Caravan.
Your replies helps greatly in searching for what would suit us, and Bruce it did become confusing, the options that are available, however we stuck to guns and we weren't dazzled by all the bells & whistles.
We have just paid a deposit on a 2018 New Age Owl, 16ft, private sale.
It's in mint condition, comes with annex walls, solar input, seperate toilet, shower, a 165lt Fridge, microwave, Diesel Heater, it was used a half dozen times, always garaged. It ticked all the boxes.
We are pretty happy. :)
Thanks again for all your advise.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250316/15fdb687132eaaf6b35a7c163805899b.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250316/fe94ed9c1420efa12e1ef315ef0aa111.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250316/e63a49bbae1d02edcddb09e550c7decb.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250316/5f364cb23ed30f501f0ffae91dbb4461.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250316/8f79174f42adf2df21ae937322517aad.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250316/998d62a247eb7eddd603e0f82382e10e.jpg)

If we were looking for a caravan to replace our camper , this would be exactly what we'd be looking for.
Everything you want/need and no extras to make life more complicated eg single axle.
Cheers
Jim
-
Hi Jim,
We looked & looked. Listen to what swaggers suggested and other Mates that had vans.
The MUX will tow this comfortably, it has everything we needed, doesn't seem to be anything we need to do, except change the 7 pin flat plug to a 12 pin.
We'll keep our Hardfloor rear fold camper, and the 80 Series for two night camps off road/off grid.
I thing daughter No 2 has her eyes on it.

Thanks Pottsy,
It does come with a cover, however I will build a carport to put it in.
It'll have to be big, I'm about to kick off another bow to my quiver, I have a 4.8M trailer, that I have been modify to carry a Zero Turn Cox Cruz, and advertise to do small acerage mowing.
More news of this come mid April.
Trying to get smarter, not work harder, body is stuffed, still waiting for a Knee Replacement.

Cheers guys.
Fysh is over the moon.
MUX goes into tomorrow to change the plug from a 7 pin to a 12 pin.
Then Wednesday we'll collect the van.
Hey, just a question, besides a grey Anderson plug, the van has a Red Anderson plug.
What would it be for?
Is this something we'll have to take the van to an Auto Sparky for?
Cheers.

Hi,
Some (Jaycar and Kickass) red plugs I have bought in the past are interchangeable with genuine grey plugs. Genuine red plugs are a different profile so won't fit.
I use the red & grey to differentiate solar and battery power.
Not sure if others use the same method.
Cheers

Cheers mate,
I've googled, red seems to be used as another solar input.
If it does, the panel would have to match the current panels on the roof, or would it need it's own regulator?
Another couple of google results, said it maybe a stability control system.
Hmm, I'm still thinking I'll take the MUX & van to a Auto sparky.
I really don't want to stuff it.
Thank you for reply.

Hairs, the red Anderson on my van powers the van stability control unit that works of the electric brakes.
It has its advantages when motoring down the highway but a pain going over speed bumps etc where it will lock the the brakes from side to side. Off road I unplug it.
You can drive without it being connected.
The other potential reason there is a red Ando is that it may provide power to the brake away brake control. I think NSW had a different requirement to other jurisdictions. Is there a little box on the van drawbar with a LED light that run either green for good and red for bad. There will be an associated wire that I attached between the car and van .

Yep, as per the others, the red plug on ours is for the ESC, & boy, do you know about it when that activates after hitting a bump / pothole or similar at speed! :o ::)
Rather than changing to a 12-pin plug, you may like to consider another Anderson just for fridge power ???
-
Hey, just a question, besides a grey Anderson plug, the van has a Red Anderson plug.

Yes, will do when we pick it.
However, I didn't see a two Anderson plugs on the back of their DMax.

Yep, Red Anderson Plug is Stability Control.
It towed really well down the H/Way from Evans Head, only sat on 90kph, just so she could get use to it.
Fysh drove, you could feel after B Doubles passed, the air turbulent, but nothing to worry about
She did good getting over the one lane at Maclean, and on the narrow road to the Lawrence Ferry.
Will have to get a set of towing mirrors and that it.
Organise the Stability control wiring and a Blue Slip tomorrow, change the rego, and we are good to go.

Happy Days

Great work, you will have new found enjoyment dragging a wobbly box around the country side, takes camping to a new level.
I find the worst is when passing the b doubles is the air turbulence is at its worst as you come past the front of the truck with the van. It is as though the truck is trying to pull you back.
Enjoy

It's a hard sell for these confused rainbow Greenies when he clearly doesn't lack food and has money for piercings and hair dye. Still he doesn't appear to be sporting thousands of dollars worth of tatts like one young couple in trendy clothes with their 2 huge pedigree dogs whinging about not being able to afford to get on the property ladder. Mate, all I can tell you from the many people I know who have had it done, (the wife both knees) is don’t over do it and do the exercises they give you. Knock any pain on the head before it worsens, don’t be a martyr. If you can strengthen your upper thigh muscles now, before the op that will give you a good head start in your recovery. Worst thing you can do after the op is fall over, steady as she goes is a good thing.

I'll post up for sure how it goes mate.
Member Bullfrog, has just had his done about 2 months ago.
He's been a great support, with info on the do's & Don't.
The surgeon who is to perform mine, did Bullfrogs, and has a great wrap with these replacements, highly recommended by many.
That in itself, is of great comfort knowing he is the best in his field.

Jeez, what'd you do to it ??? :o
I thought tearing the cartilage on my left knee 3 times was bad enough! ::)
2 knee recos. 1st was when I was 16. Hit by a car at the age of 13. Last operation they had to remove a large chunk of cartilage. 30mm long, 15mm wide, 8mm thick. It locked my knee in a bent state and couldn't straighten it. Was limping around site for 3 days, till I decided to go to Moree hospital the next day for an xray. Once I'd seen the xray image, and got the you can't drive message, (wasn't my first rodeo driving, but a hella drive) I had a bigger problem, how do I get my work trailer and get home when the site was on
black soil and had been raining. After deflating the tyres and a lot of right foot , I was on my way home. Fueling up when needed too. Was glad to be home in the end. Few rum cans and some good meds works wonders.
Then the next problem came, my surgeon had retired a few years beforehand. Bugger. New surgeon from within the same group. Melbourne Orthopaedic Group. Month later and 10k poorer and 1 month recovery, the longest ever, was given the green light to work again.
Normally that type of surgery I'm walking the next day, I've had plenty of them.
But what's weird is that the knee doesn't feel like it has in the past, I can lift my heal off the ground when laying flat. Something I've never done since the accident.
I do know when I do need to have the knee replacement, my current work will cease. Office environment won't suit this tradie, I'm too vocal >:D so it'll be a forced early retirement
But what makes me smile is when

I do know when I do need to have the knee replacement, my current work will cease. Office environment won't suit this tradie, I'm too vocal >:D so it'll be a forced early retirement
But what makes me smile is when
Same too young for retirement,
Mate, I've been waiting over 3 years, Public system for this.
It will be 8 weeks out of work, that's why I'm regearing my business and starting to bring in contractors I can trust & rely on to perform the standard of work I expect from myself.
Still going to be a drop in income, but hopefully I have set things up right.
This plays heavily on Fysh's mind, a drop in income, and not being able to drive, she'll need to spend time away from her work, which she doesn't have banked time off for, due to only starting her new job a few months ago just before Christmas.
I'll looking forward to being pain free, which I'm happy to deal with, for the lack of income

My bad, with the url, sorry.
Soft Grass,
It wasn't to show how thick of grass it could cut, more so how it would not get bogged like a Zero Turn.
Besides, why would I want to try and cut 3 foot wet vegetation, not even the Zero Turn will do that.

Great machine Hairs.
My brother got a similar machine imported direct from China, his is a petrol hybrid with an 80cm cut. Payed around $4000. Works great on his sloping riverside block.
-
Hey Rags,
Cheers
This is an American built machine.
It was $11k, I ordered it in February, though Scintex.
https://www.scintex.com.au/ (https://www.scintex.com.au/).
I had for a long time, researched these kinda machines, the motors, cutting drive, build.
Even though it is alot more than a Chinese variant, I felt it was a better bang for buck, using it commercially.
Like a Cox zero turn, it is all fabricated, deck, chassis.
The Loncin LC1P96F engine has a pretty good rap, even if it does sh1t the bed, a replacement vertical drive, Honda/Briggs is available as a swap.
This is also, the next generation, it is 250mm wider, a twin cutter(not single), as the older model was.
I've submitted paperwork to the local council as a contractor(yeah I know they don't pay within 30 days), and also RMS(Main Roads).
Something I have to do,
Carry my own water for wash down, using a battery operated pressure washer( Makita make one, I have a ton of Makita 18v gear and 12v to 18v charger) if town water isn't available.
Cross grass contamination is a real thing.

Thanks Hairs, sounds a good machine. I did raised with the brother the reliability and support with regards his machine.
The potential for council/RMS work would be a good outcome.

The last couple of weeks I have been doing blacksmithing demos for primary school kids. Normal process is make an object while explaining some of what I am doing during the process then when complete take questions.
Had some grade 3 kids last week and they were asking all the normal questions like how hot is the fire, why do you make it hot, what is burning in the fire etc. Then a little girl puts her hand up & her question stumped me for a while.
"Can Santa get down that chimney?" Talk about left field, I could see the teachers behind them holding back their chuckles.

Raym, you have to learn to think like a grandfather eg - "No, of course Santa can't squeeze down this chimney - he's too FAT. He sends one of his elves down and then gets them to open the door for him. Don't worry about being chastised for using inappropriate body shaming language - no one wants to be dragged into Santa conversations

Smiling is the only thing I can do.
I was booked in for a Knee replacement this morning, did all the prep, was careful not to scratch my skin over the last week.
Arrive at the hospital, 9am, sit down with an admin, do all the paper work, wait some more, sit with a nurse to double check everything, she hands me the gown.
Another nurse appears, "Just hold it there, I'll be back"
5 minutes later I'm told it has been rebooked for the 9th of July.
I didn't ask questions, maybe it was an emergency

I got to go to the pub early.

Sounds like the wife six years ago, all prepped ready to go in to have a deep brain stimulator fitted, cancelled last minute due to surgeon called to an emergency. Head shaved, psyched for the op which is performed 80% whilst awake. Oh well, luckily it was only a fortnight’s delay.
Good luck with the knee.
-
Yep, had the same a few years ago, but "just" for an endoscopy.
Difference was I'd been there since 10.30 for a 1pm slot, done all the checking in, changed into the gown, & been sitting in the lounge for a few hours before being told at 3pm that something had happened so the Doctor wouldn't be able to do me, please ring his rooms & rebook :-\
The nurse also said always go for morning bookings, because they usually work, but the later in the day, the more chance that something will break, another procedure goes over time etc so you get bumped >:(
-
Fizzie, I thought being booked in for 9am, I would be near first cab off the rank .
Usually has been good when I have my colonoscopy.
Kick off at 9am, home by lunch time.
I know A Knee replacement is a lot different, so I'm figuring someone needed attention greater then me.
I look forward to preparing for the 9th of July.
Anyway, with the help of two contractors we got a kitchen removed, new one half installed.
Just waiting for the sparky & plumber to rough in.
Then the test of the cabinets can be installed, the Splash back tiled, Trims installed.
Should be out of there Friday Lunch time.
I'm fortunate to have good mates who I trust.

The wheels on the van are tiny, 24” on 14” rims. That in fact is the first upgrade.
I have a set of 245x70R16 tyres and rims from a 2023 Jayco journey going on there really soon. That’s a 29 inch tyres, so will give me 2.5 inch lift.

Hmm I got ASAP roadworthy’s to do a pre-purchase inspection. There are quite a few companies around Brisbane that offer this service. Unfortunately I don’t think I got $400 worth of value as they missed some fairly substantial issues, that would have caused me to either not buy the van or at least negotiate some more for repairs or reduction in price to cover repairs.

I definitely got a 5 page report, 5 pages of titles with little or no content/ comments included with those titles.
6 photos, 3 internal and 3 external
I certainly wouldn’t recommend them.
I did also get the report that told me it hadn’t been written off or have any finance outstanding on it.

-
Well, I had my first physo appointment today.
Things are good, I've done as I was asked & told to do and they are happy with my progress.
Thanks Bullfrog for your advice and support.
Now. I have a couple different exercises to achieve in the next fortnight.
Pain management in the early hours of the morning is something I need to sort out, I am not taking any medication/pain killers throughout the day. I do have the prescribed ones before bed, but they don't seem to last as long as they should.
I stopped the taking of the pain killers during the day, because I was getting head aches, kinda like a hangover.
When I discussed this with the physo. They said it was the body craving the drugs and I was doing the right thing.
I'm able to walk around the house outside, to the front gate, go to the shed, do small tasks. Walk up & down stairs, although slowly.
As they say,
No pain. No gain, but don't over do it.
Friday I go back to the Surgeon to have the surface stitches removed, :)
Happy Days.
Sorry to bore you all with this, but it might help someone prepare for a Knee replacement.

Thanks Hairs, I taking note. I’ve a knee in the near future, but I need a shoulder done first. Matter of which hurts the most & the shoulder wins. Brother had his done in SA last year & they scan the shoulder & then 3d print a new one. Perfect fit. I rang around Perth trying to find a surgeon that does these but no luck, then blow me down the women doing an X-ray of my shoulder for the GP tells me about the surgeon in Busselton that does these 3D ones. It’s a lot bloody closer than Perth too. Apparently the old way you get a new joint that’s the closest to your current shoulder, may not be exact so this printed one is a much better fit. Just waiting on the surgeon to get back to me, he’s on holidays.
-
As they've said to me though, when I've had various bits worked on - do not put up with pain, as it doesn't do you any good!
Have you tried Osteomol at all?

Yesterday while waiting to see the physo, the chap next to me was 84, he had both his hips replaced 9 weeks ago, you wouldn't know it to see him walk.
I'm blown away by how quickly I am recovering, today I am going to see how much firewood I can get from the wood shed, might even cut up some kindling.

Hey Fizzie,
No I haven't.
I have Endo, Osteo, asprin.
I've been reluctant to dose my self up on too many pain killers.
Shock horror, I haven't even had a beer for nearly a month, wanting my body to have the best crack at healing after this.
Even tho many have given their advice to have it.

I'd hate do more damage while p155ed, being out of work for nearly 7 weeks is a head %%# as it is, having more time off due to me being a D#$k, would probably cause a divorce :O

As they've said to me though, when I've had various bits worked on - do not put up with pain, as it doesn't do you any good!
Have you tried Osteomol at all?
Yes I have. Live on it at times, my wife was a nurse & used to laugh at the oldies ( now we’re old) who used to take whatever at night to get a good nights sleep, or reasonable at least, now we’re doing it. Don’t recon I’ll need them after the op & I’m looking forward to it sooner the better

Thanks Hairs I’m 73 so I’m not so worried about taking pain relief these days figure if it does some damage I’ll probably fall off the perch by then anyway. You’re right about the advances in medicine. I guess 50 years & more ago you just had to put up with it.

Sorry for the long reply.
35 years ago, My parents & my self operated the Maclean Taxis, you meet many people from all walks of life.
One particular regular customer was a little old Aboriginal lady, Annie.
She was about 5 foot 2, she usually had her daughter with her.
Her husband had passed, but she was surrounded by her children & Grandchildren & Great Grandchildren, she was a pleasure to talk to and and a laugh with.
On the way into tiqn one day, I asked her how long it had been since she had visited the Maclean Lookout, she replied, it must been over 60 years, so I took her for a drive up there and it was a dirt track then.
I pointted out the Norfolk Pines on Yamba Hill, the Sugar mill, Iluka, Clarence Peak, and on the way down the view over to her home at Ilarwill, she was amazed.
When I dropped her off at her daughters, I said to her,
Annie, I would of loved to of seen the things you have seen as the world has changed.
You have seen from horse & cart, to the Motor vehicle, to man landing on the moon.
Unborn babies being operated on while still in the womb.
She smiled at me, and said.
And just imagine what you are going to see.
I'll never forget that.

Hi,
As a kid, the local Rabbitohs delivered weekly from a horse and cart. He had a hand bell, and could be heard around the block.
Yet another horse would wait while the milkman carried a small churn around to our back door to ladle a few pints into our milk billy each morning.
Gorringe's wood yard delivered wood and coal by dray as well.
Cars had black canvas folding roofs, flappy plastic side windows, started with a crank handle, and the one tail light had its switch on the lamp at the rear so the driver could see it had turned on.
Hmm, does that mean I'm getting old?
Cheers

Nah, you just started before most of us.... ;D
I can remember, the bread van, the ice van, the briquette truck, and the clip-clop of the milkies horse.
I can also remember that the night man did his bit, but I guess I must have been asleep at the time.
Dad used to get our rabbits for us....
We were 1 of the 2 families in the street that had a car, a Mk1 Zephyr. It was preceded by a long line of bitza's.
Dad was very handy and resourceful. His first car was built from parts he scrounged from the tip....
I remember the neighbours sometimes coming in to use our telephone.
We were the only entry of our surname in the Melbourne phone book.
It's about a page now, and I only know a couple....

Interesting about the aboriginal lady, When Bad Scott & I went out to surveyor general corner we had to go to the community at Warakurna. I had trouble with my pass for the corner. They had an elder woman there that seen the A bombs go off at Maralinga. Then when we went to get the guide at Irrunytju (Wingellina) to take us out to the corner, Robyn Davidson (The book Tracks) who crossed to the west coast with camels stayed with our guide another aboriginal women elder. Robyn had paid for her to go to Melbourne to stay with her. So Bad Scott & I had a very interesting trip.
Then talk about Milkies and old tourers, when I was a kid I used to help the Milky on his round Sunday mornings. With a horse & cart. The first car I remember my parents having was, I think a 1926 Pontiac I remember dad saying it was the first Pontiac with a 6 cylinder. Dad said he reckoned I didn’t remember that car but I told him he painted a red strip around the body & I was right so one of my earliest memories. All the rest of his cars were Holdens.

The Museum at Goomeri has a 1927 soft-top, that's still road-registered!

Bugger me. My lad used to work for a beekeeper out of murgon some years back, if only I’d known.

21 days done.
Only having pain killers in the early hours of the morning.
Getting around outside well, I've taken both wheelie bins out yesterday(some 40 odd meters), I'll bring them back in later today.
Both my vehicles haven't been started for nearly a month, so I thought I'd have a crack at sitting in them.
Went and tried to sit in the work ute, nope, can't bend the knee to get it in the door.
But, I can get in the 80 series without a problem.
Carried two lots of wood from the wood shed to inside for the fire yesterday, made it up the 7 treads on the veranda without a problem.
I'm slowly get there.
Might be time for an after lunch nap.

Hi, glad you are on the recovery side now. Stiff knees are such an inconvenience, getting about, chairs, putting on socks and getting off the dunny without falling flat on the floor.

Hi Austastar,
Thanks mate.
Amazing what we take for granted and also what we do to over come what we can't do now.
I know it will get better, as the saying goes,
No pain, no gain.
But I'm not going to anything stupid either.
It's only been 3 weeks, so I still have a long road ahead.

Sheezes :O
How's things now?
Today I achieved a bit.
A couple of arm full fire wood loaded inside.
Walked down the grassed back lane to say G'day to a neighbour.
Measured up for a Sail Shade off the front of the Carport.
And, the dozens of phone calls organising upcoming work.
Oh, and submitted my tax reporting.
Happy Days, a refund. :)
