hi all,
a question for pajero owners (mainly 2010 onwards)...
looking to add a second battery under the bonnet and wondering which battery tray pajero owners might have?
looking at this one at the moment:

anyone got one? maybe something different? one that you wouldn't recommend?
not interested in putting second battery in the third row of seats area. want to keep that free.
thoughts appreciated.

i did look at those, but they seem a bit flimsy to me... IMO...
interested to hear what other pajero owners have/think...

My Piranha one has been in the patrol for ~10 odd years now. No issues at all.
Done Shit loads of offroading and touring since then.
Be interesting to see what Paj owners have found.

I had that one in my NP, with a 55Ah yellowtop (that's about the biggest you'll fit). Never had a problem with it. It bolts in using existing hardware, which is nice. Made a small bracket and mounted the VSR on the firewall next to it, but I'm not much of a pic taker, especially when I'm in the middle of swearing at a project, so I can't show you, sorry.

The aux tray in my Patrol is a converted Piranha tray from my old Paj.
ARB were useless (twice), so I modded what I had.
It's been in the Patrol for 18 years, and still going. It's seen plenty of corrugations.

I have one of these. One of only a couple that would fit a N70 battery. Bolts to firewall as well as the bottom of the inner guard. Also it clears the air con pipe work without having to bend the ac pipework which you have to do with some others.

For those with the BOSS model, would there be room to attach a traxide unit to the side wall?

I’ve got an ARB tray which replaces the flimsy plastic factory tray, as well as adds a spot for a second battery.
I would suggest it’s only a matter of time until the factory plastic tray breaks (usually where the the hold down clamps attach to the tray).

I've got a traxide SC 80 on the firewall behind the tray, its cosy but ok for last 3 1/2 years

I had a piranha one in our paj , was fine and well made iirc. There’s not a lot of room left so do your wiring through the firewall first. If I remember the ARB one had higher sides so gave you a place to mount the isolator/VSR etc but was either stupid money or ARB didn’t have stock forever

I had the Piranha tray in my NM. No problems with it but it made access to the firewall impossible. My brother has just picked up an ex council NX that has the ARB dual tray fitted. Its a FAR better arrangement than the single tray against the firewall type. Heaps of room beside the tray to mount an isolator, extra relays, fuse panel etc, and you can still get at the grommet to run cables. All that and you still can fit a full sized battery.
Having worked on both types this is the ONLY one I would consider.

Ill also add that this system replaces the flimsy FRP tray that MM fits, which if you haven't broken yet, you will..

Got the Piranha tray in our NT.
No problems with it in the 6 or so years it's been in

looks like it's a race in two...
boss4wd tray or arb tray...
i like both, so easier placement of my traxide sc80 and related relays will probably be the deciding factor...

The flimsy, prone to breaking factory battery trays were an issue on the NM's. Good to see Mitsubishi have addressed this on the later models....
Years ago I made a dual battery tray for our NM based on the Piranha one. Used 40x40x2mm angle and had a removable base, so I could install the wiring, isolator and breaker underneath out of sight.

Here a couple of photos of my auxiliary battery tray with the traxide SC 80 tucked away on the firewall on my dodgy homemade bracket. Its held up fine for 3 1/2 years and about 80,000 km.

They have??? My ex 2003 and now my 2016 Paj's have the same Shitty tray, prone to pulling the eyes off.
DB, interesting solution on the donaldson kit. Mine is firewall mounted and I dont like it. It puts too much flex on the firewall. I need to make a bottom support bracket that rests against the filter to stop that flex. One of those roundtuit projects.

The chequerplate is riveted to the scrap of tin and then the tin is picked up on some factory bolts / holes. The SC 80 is just held on to the chequerplate with some small bolts.

It was a tongue in cheek comment in reply to a few posters moaning about the crap trays on later models.
NM's came out in 2000, you'd think 16 years later they could improve a simple plastic tray? The previous owner had patched up ours with bits of hoop iron and a crap ton of rivets. Worked better than factory!

Go the ARB tray. Replaces the factory plastic one as well.
The factory cables are long enough to then fit a 10" crank battery in the rear spot, and a 12" auxillary in the front location. You will need to remove the front lip though which is very easy to do.

looks like i can fit an 85AH battery in the AUX part, without resorting to cutting the lip...
that should be ample for my needs...
