I hope to get close to those numbers! I've started my 8th year with my school this year.
-
Only 11 years with this company, but I worked for the company that my current employer bought out and the company that the other company bought out. ;)
It's almost 15 years doing what I do now, but only 11 years of long service to show for it.... >:D

Like you, enjoying retirement, worked since I was 14, looking forward to more travel once the wife has her health issues remedied, hopefully all done over the next 12 months.

40 years then rewarded with a wonderful redundancy. Couldn't have scripted it better.

Swannie
I ticked over 23 years last Wednesday.
Same here, only full time job since school.
Although the company is vastly different to 23 years ago. Different name, different owners, different address (4 times) and different direction.

Yes Diver agree, I was lucky, got out at 55 but took a job I liked for 3 more years. Retired over 10 years now.

VJO,
You're in your 8th year.
I found grade 4 the hardest 😋

I am 23 years later this year in September. My boss has 48 years this year. Last year we had a guy retire at 72 years old. First and last job with this company, 55 years service I think it was.
-
Does self employed count???
35 Years working on and now running the family farm, the only job I have ever had since leaving school.
-
Reached a record for me last year.... 4 years with the same employer...
Most of my stuff has been max 2 year contracts for the last 20 years, with some running to 3 years. Shortest was a 3 month contract for one bit of work, and a lot of mine were seasonal work between April 2005 and late 2007, and again in 2010 - 2013.
Does make my resume a bit long - I think as someone said the other day I need to look at doing a portfolio based on instead.
-
38 and a bit years and finished in 2007.
Now just coasting along.
-
Started in 1980 as an apprentice plumber where I stayed with that govt employer for 12years.
Went out as self employed which I did for 8 years before injury forced me off the tools.
Been inspecting plumbing combined with industry education and training for last 18 years.
Not sure when my last day of work arrives, I am visiting the financial planner next month, but 5-10 years is my guess.
-
28 years now. Hurt myself before Christmas and been on compo so lets see if I make 29.
-
42 years, 5 months and 21 days and retired the day after my 60th birthday on an adequate DFRDB/PSSdb pension.
-
33 years then Medically Retired.

Considering I’m generation X, I count myself as pretty blessed to have fallen into the job I have now.
When I was doing my apprenticeship Peter Reith was taking the final steps in the casualisation of the workforce.
When I finish my time employers where rejoicing in their new found freedoms and there was only contract on offer for any one new to the trades.
I did the mines thing and I hated only being employed for 2 weeks at a time. I did like the fact that as much as the bosses loved the thought of being able to tell staff ‘don’t bother coming tomorrow’, they absolutely hated the fact that we could all say ‘I can’t be bothered going in today’ and half the workshop would go fishing instead.... ;)
After 4 years of being employed week to week, I was so stocked when I finally got to sign on full time and saw that I could actually build a career with a company. I don’t have any plans on going anywhere and would love to clock up the time that some of the other posters on here have got up their sleeves.
Sadly though, pretty much all of my peers will never know anything other then contract work for most of their working lives.

Yeah I must be doing something wrong. I spent 4 years in Year 3 and then this year I showed up and I got sent back to Year 2. WTF!!
-
I always got bored and moved on after 3 or 4 years.
Present job is shift with great annual leave so been here 15 years.
Hoping to job share in a couple of years. = 3 months a year actual working days with 3 1/2 weeks leave and long service after every 7 years.
Man has to have a plan.

Just over 7 years and the boss is an arsehole. But I'm banging his wife so all is good!
PS I'm self employed...

Doesn’t seem to be as common these days
That's because of the "gig economy," which is a fun way of saying "you'll never not be looking for a job." Just another thing the youngsters of today have to look forward to.

I have run my own business for 31 years and am hanging up my hat in August.
-
Second longest was my apprenticeship.......3.5 years (company went belly up mid '85).
Went back to night school and became a drafty.........9 years with 1 co. Got shafted with them then went contracting.
Longest gig contracting was just shy of 5 years.....shortest 3 months.
Over 20 years contracting........wouldn't change a thing......
-
8 years at this job and reckon I’ll be here until retirement.
When I was younger I would chase the almighty dollar.
I remember one year having 9 different jobs.
I’m glad I’m over that crap...

24 last week. First full time job here also.
-
7 years is my longest, been made redundant 3 times so a lot of it not my choice. Did 3-4 years at the mine and was hoping that would be a job until retirement but no such luck.
Current job is going on 7 weeks now, hoping to rack up the 20 years and retire from this one, but let's see how that goes. I hate changing jobs.
-

Used to be 1 interview and start tomorrow...
Now some places now have 5-6 interviews, exams to see how smart, exam to see if you would fit in the environment, psychological tests, police checks, check your facebook page... take me back to 1986 and leave me there.
-
Coming on 18th year.
I can only wish I get a redundancy when I am closer to retirement.
For those that have simply reached retirement age after long term employment with the same company, did they just let you walk out on retirement day or did they 'reward' you financially?
-
Hi,
After 39 years, and with the imminent move to a new building, I tried for redundancy but the Uni knew I was 64 and getting tired, so they held out.
Not that I resent it in any way.
As soon as we had a date to move, I gave notice effective the day before. About 6 weeks notice.
Best move ever.
Cheers

I worked for a company where the receptionist had been there over 25 years, handed in her resignation for retirement and was told they would not accept it and asked her to consider her options for a week. Two days later they made pretty much everyone in the office redundant including her.

Yup, then they ignore the results of the tests.
I did a "suite" of tests for a company, they said they knew not all would be relevant to my position but they paid for them all so I may as well do them.
Turns out I passed the database admin test never having administered a database in my life!

Pretty much the same as me, 15 years with current but original company was taken over 3 years in.
Time for me to move on but no idea what to.

young bloke from up the road from where I grew up, after 18yrs at work walked into hand in his resignation to go travel Aussie in a troopy with few mates..
boss said 'ahhh was looking for you'... Kev said I was looking for you too - but you first
So asked what the boss wanted... he was offered redundancy there and then. Kev pretended to think for a minute, and said i accept.
The boss shook his hand gave the speech about great servant etc
then asked what did you want to see me about - he dug out the letter from his bag and said I was going to resign - but you got in first :cup: :cup: :cup: :cup: The boss was pissed!

I've been self employed now 15 years. (I still need to give myself a good uppercut once in a while)

Was winning MX races and just starting out in road racing I was also able to ride 37klms to work, and very happy/fit and seem to have more money than I do now
-
If I had stayed instead of taking early retirement I would have chalked up 47 years with the same company last month. Still did 38 years with them though.
-
17 years next month still a fair few years to go yet. My dad was only a year older than me now when he retired at 48 after 30 years at PMG/Telecom got a redundancy in the 90s. Not a hope in hell of me retiring yet lol.

10yrs in a thankless job

Hahaha yep had interviews like that ... current employer .... rolled up for interview ... sat in lunch room and just had a chat , i left the room so they could chat , when i walked back in i was offered the job at a dollar amount said i needed a certain number which was aggred on then we shook hands and job was mine ..... never once was any paperwork handed over etc ..... that was approx 15 years ago
-
Does 20 years with the ex count ;D
Geez ... and the three years I did with mine seemed like a lifetime ....
-
Been self employed for the majority of the past 25 years, did do about a year and a half on wages for a builder i had previously contracted to about 4 years ago though. The misses clocked up 23 years recently where she is employed.
-
It will be 35 for me this year in July. With the ever changing rules on compliance and Legislation, it's getting harder and harder. Still enjoy what I do with the guys and hope to do so for a few more years yet.
John
-
Hubby did 33 years until manadory age retirement kicked him out.
I will have 25 years in July year and still many more to go.
Both of us with the same employer.

Have had 3 permanent jobs
First was just over 4 years then they shut the ractory and was made redundant
Longest stint was 9 years 5 mths before redundancy. 5 roles so kept changing roles
And now 3 years in current company
Just realised I've never left a company with perm employment where I could of still been there.
My dad got just under 49yrs before he got a redundancy now to work something similar out
-
23 years then redundancy,
Then re-hired (same roll) with new company owners, did another 6 years then a "sea change" into the Tow Truck business, that was ok at first then the GFC
hit. Got a wages job in Aug 2010,
Into my 8th year with them🤤

21 years in my first real job after leaving school.
Moved on post GFC looking for something different and since then have been through 2 redundancies and currently awaiting "announcements" regarding the most recent restructure my group is currently doing. As a result, longest stint has been about 3 years.
Seriously considering ramping up the part time business my wife and I run from home and going full time - I can make my own rules and conditions then!! ;D
-
29 Years working for the same clown in fabrication.
That clown would be me lol
-
Ive been with my current employer (1st line job since finishing Uni) full time for the last 11years.
Had 2 department changes in that time but on my 6th department manager, and the way things are going, soon it will probably be a 7th.
I believe i'm on my 4th (or maybe even 5th) CEO too...
Government jobs are definitely not what they are cracked up to be, especially when you aren't in upper management, but part of the underpinning that keeps the cogs turning.
Have had enough of the unrealistic pressures and expectations from both management and general public, taken myself back to school to do a post grad this year (although in the same sort of field) but hoping for a better lifestyle and healthier me at the end of it.
-

I think that's most modern companies where managers use lots of buzzwords they over heard in the Qantas lounge...
good luck with the training
-
19 years.
3 different names but same company.
Was lucky enough to start when I was 17. I am now on my 6th location around NSW.
No more moves hopefully.

Agree wholeheartedly, many upper management now have so many Kpis tied to bonuses that it's all about ticking the boxes, one of the reasons I retired. I recall a national promotion that we ran for 3 months, everything was measured, promo plan, promo materials, coverage, client participation, sales etc, the promo was dog, failed miserably, cost a lot of money.
Discussion at end of the day was about the process not why the promotion failed. Idiots
-
AHAHAHAHA
I've had 14 different employers since leaving high school in 82
8)
In that time I have been dismissed from only two of those jobs.
Rest I have waked out for a better job or the business had been sold and down sized
-
The last mine site I worked at announced in November '16 that they needed to reduce the workforce by 30 people by June 17.
By Feb 17 they had reduced it by over 35 so I thought I was safe and got two car leases. A week after I signed the second lease they announced a round of redundancies. Of course I was made redundant and stuck with two pretty new leases which really made life difficult.
-
23 years in mid 2018. I’d like to retire but reckon I’ll be here for another 5 to 10years.
Oh how I wish I’d been more sensible in me youf.
-
35 years for me. Got a weeks casual work at the small family owned sawmill to dig some trenches for electrical cables back in 1983 and never left. Worked my way through the ranks, and wound up as manager in 2005. Its awesome when you find something you like doing and work for some really nice people.
-
21 and a half years at my current employer. Resigned 3 weeks ago, one week of notice to still work out.
New employment is only 11 minutes away from home saving 2.5 hours travel every day and 40000 k's on my vehicle every year down to 4000, only one of many reasons for taking up a new challenge.
-
29 years and 9 months..Just couldn,t put in the extra 3....Huge Australian comms company that was, and still is, turning into Shit. At 61 I said up yours and retired.

Numerous jobs over the years since leaving school.

Chandlers 6 months
Bing lee 3 years
Harvey Norman 5 years
Ray White 9 years
On the road traveling for over 3 years working in different jobs in different places. Best thing I ever done...

I worked in heavy engineering construction for 48 years prior to retirement. The only break was 2 years Nashos. I applied for the dole once but got a job before I collected my first payment.
Longest stint was 4 & 1/2 years. Most jobs were around 18 months to 2 years. Travelled Australia extensively and also worked off shore and overseas.
Wouldn't have changed it for quids.
-
38 years as of this year.
Being a govt job it's been quite a roller coaster....and can't wait to retire in 5 years !!
-
Retired in 1987 after 35 years with the one employer. Only 4 years to go for me to have been retired for as long as I worked. Cheers

Back around the late 90's when I was working for myself, I'd had a bugger of a day installing a TV antenna system with multiple outlets, distribution amp etc etc, about a week before Xmas and I was knackered. I got back to my workshop, cranked up the aircon and the music, and had a few refreshing beers by myself. By the time the mrs got home, I was getting a bit hammered, and it was only about 3pm.
Wots this? she says?
Staff Christmas party... I says
She just shook her head and walked out... ;D

Left school on 1st Dec 1972. Started work on 4th Dec 1972 - with black hair. Retired from same employer 3rd July 2017 with grey hair. Employment does that to you. Now if only I could remember how to work out how long that was !!
-
Just started into the 25th year with my mob.
Though lets see how the " Dynamic Team leaders " AKA fresh young management feel about me after all the time Im going to be having off to recover from recent surgery. :-* Wheres the bum icon .

Last employer (first job out of school) was July 1990 to July 2015 - not a bad run! Latest employer from July 2015 to now.
-
36 years,straight out of school.
Same business, rail, did an apprenticeship then 10 years after finishing moved to Driver, then Driver Trainer . Never seen such poor management as now so looking around.

Problem you may unfortunately (???) face Edz, is exactly what happened to me - "Due to the physical limitations you now have, following your workplace accident, we consider that there is no longer any role that you can fulfill in the Company", so bye-bye, Fizzie.
(I've also got to admit, though, that it's not exactly the worst thing that could have happened! >:D)
-
They could always give me a flash shirt, a company I-phone to face chat my mates with at work while I hide in an office and the six figure salary that goes with it ..
Bit craggy around the edges but still young at heart . Hell I might even slick up the hair and get a manicure like the pups do . ;D
-
Last company was 25 years straight out of school, then redundancy. Now up to 3 years with new employer - see how long I can keep this up hehe.

27 years with the big T.
Coupla years at a small ISP
3 years at Optus :-[
11 Years now in ICT at a TAFE institute.
I am ready for the scrapheap and retirement.

24 years with my current place.
seems like a hell of a lot longer...

Last job was for 36 years working at the same place, but we had three owners in that time. Finally couldn't take all the crud that management thinks up these days and pulled the pin. Now have a job that has sh*t pay, no time off, and the new management has absolutely no idea what they are doing, but wouldn't change it for the world. ;D

Been self employed the majority of the past 27 years....was an apprentice the first 3 years (yep knocked a 4 year apprenticeship over in 3 years) and was a wage slave for a builder for about a year and a half (about 5 years ago), but other then that it's been unpaid holidays ever since.
