About to buy a new trailer, which is not going to be a camper per se. I am looking for an offroad high side cage trailer with mesh sides... that can help us haul stuff around when heading bush or site camping. Need a 8x5 given we have reno and site work that we have to use it for, but want to be able to put it to use as a weekend hauler as well given the Patrol's loaded to the hilt when heading out with the family.
If there would be any that has an option to put a high "rack" on it as well, I have an old Shippshape (http://www.shippshape.com.au/the-shack.html (http://www.shippshape.com.au/the-shack.html)) roof top tent that could go on top as well.

Will have a chat with them, but thought I ought to ask the professionals out there (hence my post!), as there probably would be others that have had a similar idea and requirement.
Would be grateful for any suggestions, or even better.. recommendations of companies that do this sort of thing in the (South Eastern) Melbourne area.

Make sure you look at those imported gal trailers first hand. I was in the market for a HD 7X5 earlier in the year and looked at a few. Rough welds, bolt on drawbars and questionable galvanizing. A mates gal 8x5 started rusting after 2 years.
Ended up have a trailer custom built by Towpax in Thomastown for not much more without galvanizing and a cage. I'd class it as semi offroad. 50x50x3 chassis, 100x50x3 drawbar, 400mm sides, front/rear gates full length and full width tie rails to side and rear. 1.4 ton rating, Alko electric brakes and military wrap springs.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171228/0644f13433e8ef08765d293bcffa7175.jpg)

Not sth easy but Sunshine trailers. Old school build things that are still solid 20 years later

Whats your budget?
A genuine GOOD quality offroad trailer isn't going to be cheap.

so not that close but Marshall Engineering PL are in Bacchus Marsh, very good at supplying trailer parts for DIY, but also fabricate. They saved me plenty of time and money with their advice. Others speak highly of them as well.

Believe it or not. There wasn't a single scuff with that load. Sits 50-60mm higher empty.
The 6x4 it replaced had polished inner guards....

Dog sh1t welds and a bolt on drawer bar is a good indication to keep walking.

They normally have some out the front, so you can have a look over their product.
No association, except buying spares for a trailer I've got.

Yeah - good point, and that's what I have thought about as well.. the ideal would be an offroad tandem with a cage. Possibly a "rack" on top of that with canvas on the main body..

Never heard about them, but had a look on their site and reviews and recommendations. They seem to be well regarded that's for sure. Ideally higher sides and cage as mentioned above. Tried to call them a few times, but probably not back from holidays yet, but will keep calling.

Yeah, well.. have not really set a budget, and the offroad bit is really more a reference to a heavy duty trailer. Guessing $3.5k plus depending on design and features, but I rather be buying something that's sturdy & has the setup that I ideally would like. I like the Europe Trailer attached, but with a cage and possibly a canvas wrapper for those odd times one would bring it along for an extended trip etc.

Yeah! Something like that.. we're doing a fair bit of reno & landscape stuff, so need to carry loads... but want to be able to use it to haul stuff if say we're heading out for a long weekend as well. Not hardcore offroad, but that would be more hauling to a base and do trips out from there. That's the way it usually goes.
Hence something like that, possibly with a "rack" on top + canvas around it.. probably would be a good fit for all of those use cases. ;-)

I drove past late last week and they were closed. They're pretty old school, but have been around forever. The son Mark is pretty prompt answering emails, but make sure you speak to Tony the owner. He's a bit hard to understand, but massively knowledgeable, uses only Alko stuff and has his springs made locally to his specs. Another neat thing is he gets 8x5 checker plate sheets made for 1 piece floors. While they have there set trailer templates, they're more than accommodating with customization.
Another is Victorian Trailers. I bought a 6x4 about 20 years ago and other than a rusty floor it's still going strong. They're less inclined to do custom stuff but and seem to be doing more import stuff.
Europe trailers seem pretty popular. Another is Trix Trailers.

Thanks for that. Will definitely try to call them on Monday. Expect and accept that quality will cost a bit more, but in the long run better for sure.
