Hi any one on here fish out of a kayak as im looking at getting a pedal kayak for use in port phillip bay Ive been looking at a Hobie Pro Angler any advice

The PA is a pretty big yak, and the new seat is amazing!
We've got an Outback and a Revolution, and love them.
On PPB you have to be really careful with the weather as it can change so quickly.

Don't own one, but had a mate who owned most of the hobies, including the pro angler. He also sells them out of his car yard. He did his best to stop me buying a pro angler as the weight (I think around 80kgs) was extremely difficult to handle on your own. But a pleasure to fish from

Have had a Hobie Sport (son’s), Outfitter tandem and now a Revo 11 with th Vantage seat. Can’t fault them apart from weight. The PA really should be on a trailer I reckon (although plenty get them on the roof). The new Compass looks like a possible compromise. Glenne at AKS in Geelong has done up a camo version that looks good.
Where on the bay are you?

While on viyak have a look at the story and vid of the young bloke who nearly drowned on his PA when a bit of wind came through. They are a flat water barge. Adventures are better for a bit of wind and chop as they behave somewhat like a proper kayak, as opposed to the PA. Any guys I know who’ve tried hobies offshore have ended up with South African skis, myself included.

the PA preformed poorly with the wind behind them if the rear gets lifted the rudder come out they snap side ways and you fall out the front , due to the fact they have so much primary stability that the hull wonts to stay flat to the water - if you are sideways on a wave the kayak is going be be at the same angle as the wave
although Corey was in open water at Cape Conran - Port Phillip can get nasty pretty quick to
I must say I'm not that keen on the hobie range on large bodies of water I've paddled beside a revo that got tipped over twice while I was beside him on my OK prowler 4.3 and my kayak didn't even feel twichy - again this was with an ugly trailing sea and caused the same problem lifting the rudder out of the water and the kayak snaps side ways - where as a paddle kayak the paddler has a paddle in hand that can be used to steer as well as brace
if you have your heart set on a hobie all 3 dealers do test days -

I've never had an issue with the Revo, but I don't like my wife's Outback - I find it less manoeuvrable, and more tippy despite being wider in the beam.
Largest I've been caught out in was a 1m swell/chop in PPB, and I was bloody glad to get off the water, but never felt like I was going to go in...
I also fish with minimal gear and accessories these days. 1 Alvey setup, 1 spinning, which I'm probably going to retire for another Alvey rig. The Alvey gear lasts so much longer than gear with bearings everywhere
2 rods, and a crate with a small box of pre-tied rigs behind me, and a small anchor.
If I keep anything I catch anything it goes in the tub in the front hatch.

Just found a pic of Chenskis revo at SWR is was a little bumpy out there and the paddle kayaks did handle a lot better in these seas
somewhere under the flag is the kayak and chenski
We gave away fishing for Marlin that day it was to hard to catch bait anyway - this was the day Dave got knocked over twice on the way in with a revo where as my Prowler never felt uncomfortable just as my stealth would be ok to

Yes I understand it is stupid not to, but neat to explain to a teenager that he needs to wear a life jacket.

I never leave the beach without one, and we've owned our yaks for 10 years
The best way to get the need for one across is to put him on still water, and tip him in.
While he's trying to get back on, start bouncing the kayak up and down.
I worked in outdoor education for 5 years, and we used to do this in swimming pools, but in water where the kids couldn't touch the bottom.
They soon understand that a jacket of some type is required. For years, I wore a ski vest, but now I wear an inflatable, because they're more comfortable - but they do require servicing every couple of years.

Not sure on Qld regs but down south in Vic you have to wear a life jacket in all waters while kayaking not just off shore but inshore - inclosed bays and even fresh water lakes and rivers
Not a silly rule ether - from one who has taken an unplaned dip

When I was scuba diving off of Uepi Island in Solomons, down around 120ft and a pack of hammerheads came up out of the dark and did a loop above us and shot back down out of sight - all happened in seconds.. no time to react or even let my dive buddy know about it or get a photo :( ... They is quick!!
