Title: Strange Leak
Post by: zen4x4 on October 02, 2017, 01:27:46 PM
Hey Guys and Gals,

Took my camper out to Lorne this weekend for its first use since I built it.

It rained while we were there and I had some leaks in the tent.

Now I know the tent will leak if not seasoned properly and I know my tent requires more seasoning.

However the strange thing is it was leaking through the canvas where the spreader poles are, the water was coming in and then dripping down the spreader bars.

My question is, is this because the tent needs to be properly seasoned? Or some other reason?

Any help would be appreciated.

I'll probably get yelled at, but.
Where stuff sits against canvas the water will get drawn through.
Especially bedding and similar.
The metal poles will attract moisture because they will be colder than the air around them.
Some canvas tent products have a patch sewn where the tent sits on the frame supporting it.
The double layer helps with proofing as well as wear.
You may want to try using a garden hose two or three days in a row.
Or alteratively leave the tent up in the open when you get home.
So that it gets wet overnight and spray it during the morning so that you can get it to 'cure'/shrink and dry out through the rest of the day.
If all else fails you might try reproofing the canvas.

And by garden hose, a fine mist spray works best.
If you wet it with a concentrated stream of water at high pressure, it will just push water through the canvas and only wet a small area at a time.

Zen if you haven't already also go over the stitching with a wax stick or candle and leave it set up in the sun so it melts and penetrates. It is all meant to expand and contract and seal etc but I reckon it doesn't hurt to add a further barrier
