We did the Ghan Darwin to Adel  at the end of April . Don't Think Go . We had a Ball . Every trip is an adventure  , don't stop & contemplate pack & track it .
Our trip was really a Bucket list trip , met interesting people & had the time to enjoy there company . The Staff are really good , happy & helpful , l even met the bloke behind the bar as well . Managed to drink the bar out of Crownies , Scotch , Bailies  & Red  poor catering l reckon
Have you booked yet ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Gooooooo  ,,,,,,ENJOY

I've looked into driving one way and jumping on the train for the other leg.
The 2•00mtr hight restriction for vehicles excludes my touring rig so that plan went out the window.
Current thought is fly to Darwin to explore and jump on the Ghan for the trip south.
Depending on the time of year there is the option of side trips(daily tours).

We flew to Darwin  , had 3 days in a small car poking about my old stamping ground , then jumped the train . Our train was1040m long which as it turned out worked well for us . Our cabin was in  N carriage , so ween we pulled in to a station we only had a short walk . Those in the front or back had 1/2 K
Find the lounge car closest to your cabin  Enjoy

Hi,
Back in '76 you could jump off, pick wild flowers,  and with a bit of a run, get back on again.
Don't try that now though.
Cheers

We flew to Darwin due to time restrictions and did The Ghan south to Adelaide, so I don't know much about taking a car on board.  It was a great trip, I hadn't done anything like it so i was a bit cautious when we planned it, but loved it.  The train stopped once a day for passengers to do tours, which have changed a bit since we did it 18 months ago, but most of them were included in the train fare.  Stuff like helicopter flights were extra so it was canoes in Katherine Gorge for us, which was fine because 99% did the boat tours and we had the place to ourselves after they were around the corner.

We travelled Gold Class and scored a slightly larger cabin than normal for that class, with a table and chairs, but there's plenty of room in the lounge cars for sitting in during the day.  I don't think you'll be bored though, by the time you plough through breakfast, lunch, dinner, pre- dinner snacks and drinks and spending a few hours off the train.

There's substantial discounts if you book well in advance, so if you are able to plan months ahead, it's worth it.

My wife and a friend of hers are heading down to Adelaide next month to do the Ghan, Kimberley, Broome, down to Perth for a week then back home.
Meanwhile, Muggins here looks after the property and dogs. Hmmmm, 4 weeks of solitude doesn't sound too bad, ay!
