Smoking will be banned from nearly all outdoor dining areas in Melbourne, and the entire state, next week.

Any individual who ignores the ban can be fined up to $777, with a business facing a whack of $7773.

New rules for Melbourne smokers

Smoking will be banned from nearly all outdoor dining areas in Melbourne come August 1.

While non-smokers will be breathing a carcinogenic-free sigh of relief, those who still succumb to the occasional dirty dart may be wondering how and where they will be able to do so.

...
How will it be enforced?

Council inspectors will be watching for smokers still lighting up.

However, a spokeswoman for Health Minister Jill Hennessy said the first priority of the inspectors would be "to make sure businesses understand the ban" and said fines would be issued "where necessary".

Businesses also risk a fine for failing to display 'no smoking' signs.

I thought thats what they first created outdoor dining areas for, then they become trendy so now they boot them out of there. Dont worry me as I'm not a smoker but agree with Moggy just one more step towards full nanny state status

And that was really my point, and I find it hypocritical of a government to happily take billions in tax revenue and then ostracise those that generate that very income.
BTW I'm in favour and a non smoker, just have concerns about govt segregating the public & eroding peoples rights. It creates a "us & them" mentality much like most unions
Today it's smoking, tomorrow..........

Diners worried about smokers in outside dining areas, but what about vehicle fumes at some of those places that are on the footpath close to traffic.   I am not a smoker, never have been.
Cheers,

I wanna know how they will police it... Hopefully it isn't just another feel good bullShit law pulled out on teenagers when they are desperate for another way to hold up the kids.

Like a lot of laws, they will police it if they happen to catch you in the act. Which means a lot who don't want to obey the law, will get away with it .

Obviously they won't let the shop owner police it.

Bring it on, then ban it in camp sites, caravan parks, nat parks etc as well.
Yep, I couldn't care for it or those who smoke.
In all my long haul international travels, I used to enjoy watching the pathetic smokers fuss over trying to get to a smoking place to light up, always an amusing sight.
I've suffered for 30 odd years of pubs and work breathing the crap, watching them suffer now is great. Pay back time.
Double the Tax on it to whilst their at it.
PS.
I'll fetch the pop corn if anyone needs more.  ;D
