Title: Where to mount fire extinguisher
Post by: smiles on June 18, 2017, 08:50:59 AM
I am looking for ideas on where people mount their fire extinguishers within their 4x4. Usually I would put under drivers seat but not an option in the Fortuner. So I am seeking the collective wisdom of the community for ideas / inspiration

Cheers
Simon

Just inside rear tailgate/cargo area on either side wall or onto inside of tailgate door. Always close and easy to get to, unless of course the fire is in your rear cargo area.

Chances are that if you can fit the extinguisher under your seat, then it won't be big enough to put a proper fire out when you go to use it. The 2 people i know that have dealt with such situations, have had to use multiple small bottles to try and put the fires out....so maybe look at using a bigger bottle if you can find a home for it.

how legal would that be right next to the passengers head? I don't think it would. Might need some padding on it lile a rollbar.

The reason that I went with this bracket is that it's not going to fly apart on impact like the brackets that are supplied with all units. To the best of my knowledge there's no better solution the this mounting problem.

If it's under the drivers or passengers seat it'll still become a missile in an accident if your using the standard supplied brackets ( that are no more than wire ).
Each to their own I guess !!!

Mines at the base of the seat not under the seat.
My comment was more to do with the passenger smashing their head on it in rough terrain or an accident. Ask your road worthy guy if it complies and he would sign off on it being there. Why not mount it up high in a horizontal position?

I with rumpig most are too small

We have high ones in our work cars......

I have never fitted on to my own car......cars burning to the car is rare, the couple of accident I have come across haven't needed an extinguisher.

Seems to be a standard fitment theses days.

Don't know if you have drawers? Mines bolted to the back of them.

It's only the small extinguisher. However only ever seen two cars catch fire.
One got put out with a small extinguisher (more were ready if needed)
And one was so far alight by the time we got there, no extinguisher was going to save it.

Just as a side note
Many of these extinguishers stay in the same position for years and the chemical powder compacts, leaving them useless.
It's recommended that at least annually (like your services) that you turn the fire extinguisher upside down and shake vigorously to loosen the powder then return to hanging brackets

I've gotten into the habit of doing this when I rotate the tyres, every 10K's.
Just like the fuel filter, it's just become part of the servicing schedule.

Dolht, forgot to add a pic.

Thanks for the input. Good food for thought. Especially regarding keeping the dry power friable

Never thought about the powder settling. Maybe having it horizontal and spin it in the bracket from time to time.

Why anyone in their right mind would put 1,2 or 5kg of steel on the soft squishy human side of a steel barrier is beyond me...........

You'd be surprised where extinguishers have ended up. I have personally seen the damage one did to a helmet at a race meet at Phillip Island where the mountings tore outta the floor. Lucky he was wearing a helmet (still ended up with the mother of all lumps on his scon..........

There also is footage of a "secured" 2 kg extinguisher mounted on an off road buggy that becomes a projectile (ended up 50 odd meters away and in the footage it does look like it's been shot from a cannon) in a roll over.

If you want to play Russian roulette with an extinguisher on the wrong side of a steel cargo barrier..........go right ahead but, think of the other occupants who travel with you.

Get a large fire blanket instead. Better off putting people out than property.

those 1kg fire extinguishers are only a feel good thing.. fairly useless for most fires by the time you stop etc...

I've always kept one in the kitchen at home though. When we were teenagers my brothers boiled over a pot of oil making doughnuts. Kitchen filled with smoke so quick they couldn't see a thing. One of them grabbed the small fire extinguisher and blindly sprayed white Shit everywhere. Hell of a mess but probably saved the house.

mount it where you can reach it. and every 6 months you should be checking it still has pressure is not leaking and turn it upside down a few times to loosen the powder inside..after 5 years its probably a throw away as yhey are supposed to be hydrostatically tested to make sure the cylinder is still in good nick. cheaper to replace than get tested.
