Title: Wanted - damaged camper trailer
Post by: dawsoe on June 11, 2017, 11:40:30 AM
Hi All,
I am looking for a damaged camper trailer ( unregistered or written off OK ). I don't require the tent.
I am basically after an independent suspension 8 x 5 trailer with the additions of side cupboards and provision for fridge etc up front, lockable cupboards on the sides.
I will be modifying so it can carry several motorbikes and camp gear in the back.
If you have something that may fit the requirements please let me know. I am located in Sydney.
My previous camp trailer was a complete campsite Kakadu - but I couldn't bring myself to removing the tent and modifying this.

Not with the old vin, theoretically possible to use the parts and make a "new" trailer. What this entails varies from state to state a little bit as well as the success of people who have tried.

You may get lucky, you may not...

The RTA guy that came to my house and inspected my trailer before they gave me a vin number was very specific;
"When you apply for a new vin number for a home made trailer in NSW we personally inspect them to make sure they are actually home made and not re-birthed."

There was no grey area with that guy, if my trailer wasn't clearly home made I'm positive he would have had an issue.

Others in NSW may have had different experiences registering their home made trailers, but that was mine.

There was one in the Ebay Find thread where a bloke had fully restored a wreck, and couldn't get it registered.

If it as easy as people think they wouldn't bother with the rules would they?

I have read of people doing it and getting a caravan at a fraction of the cost and have also read of people doing it where they have lost money as it is still not registerable. It also varies from state to state a bit too, from memory WA have an actual document I have seen somewhere about how you can do it, while from what I have read it is virtually impossible in NSW. I think anyone considering it should fully investigate it before venturing down that path.
