Title: McHitch worth it?
Post by: Agent009 on May 26, 2017, 12:27:51 PM
The campers I am looking at all have Poly Block hitches. It's around $350 to upgrade to a McHitch Auto.

Is it worth it?

we have the standard, not auto and it is excellent.  whenever we upgrade we will look at an auto on the next one.

I have the standard, and dad has the auto. I prefer my standard, little bit more of a simple design I think and much lower profile.

And cheap.

Unhitching the auto is via big lever that unlocks it, and you just drive forward.

Thanks saltboxII. Sounds like a winner to me.

Just have to make sure I can fit the camper in the garage with it. I can fit the camper in with poly block by about 10cm. So as long as the mchitch isn't 10cm longer than poly block I'm all sweet.

Go auto every day.  One of the best mods we have made to our camper, would never use anything else now.  The ability to just reverse onto the camper makes life so simple and it really is a one man job - so the wife can go and look after the kids whilst I hitch up in seconds.

Thanks Ben Archer. I'll be getting it if it fits in my garage.

I compared a few pics and it looks like it sticks out about the same amount as poly block...maybe even a tad less. So I should be right.

One of the things with the auto is that the tongue can be moved vertically out of the way so on my camper it took a few mm less space than the polyblock it replaced.

Yep, agree with this.  You can pivot the "pin" section anyway you need to to gain a little extra space.  One of the reasons we went this option also.

Oh yeah Agent009, if your MU-X also has the reverse camera it really doesn't get much easier to hitch up.  As long as you get relatively close to the height you need the pin will pivot and slot in without any problem.  Insert locking pin and you're done.

Swapped from a Hyland hitch to McHitch Autocoupler best mod we have done to the van.
Always had trouble getting the Hyland off the car.

Been thinking of changing over to one of these was well instead of the Tregg currently fitted.
The only thing that I dont like the look of,  is the locking handle that sticks out.
I normally access the back of the troopy from the left hand side - right where this thing is. Has anyone that has got one barked their shin / knee on it yet?   (probably learn after the first couple times tho'  :'()

Removed the (PITA) AL-KO hitch, and installed the McHitch Auto recently.  Fantastic mod, well worth the money.
Draw a line on your jockey wheel so that the trailer and car height is the same, then you can just reverse in (using camera).  Did it yesterday in 1 go.
It's a marriage saving device.

Its hinged and folds in towards the car so no big drama. Had it on my Paj and now use it on the Cruiser with no problems. Best thing since sliced bread :)
