Kerry and I have been thinking about the idea of holding fund raising movie nights at our place...
The intention is that we have 3 monthly kids/adults movie nights in our backyard (acreage). We would charge a cost/person/family, the proceeds would either go to Myswag server costs or RFDS.
We were intending to also have a camp fire going.
So, my request is....
1. How many would interested ? North Brisbane
2. I have a data projector. Anybody that would be able to help with building a portable outdoor movie screen ?
Thanks

Hey Mark,
Mate we would come along to support the cause. Kids would probably run around instead of watching a movie, but that doesn't matter either. Reckon Sixpac would be in also.
What are you thinking here? Drive in watch, few drinks and P.O or Swags, fire, movie, a few more drinks and crash the night?
Time permitting, I could lend a hand by driving sixpack over so he can help :)

Sounds like a great idea

Sounds like a great idea Mark. If I lived closer I could loan you my LOTR dvd's.
By the way, I've been reading a few of the posts on here, and it seems there's a tradition of people that organise raffles and fundraisers can often end up with a new 200 series. Are you in need of a new 4by by any chance?

:o :o ;D ;D

What size screen are you looking at?
I have a screen that came from a classroom in the shed. It hasn't been looked at for years and could be rusted away or rat chewed but if it was big enough I could drag it out and check it over.
Cheers

Gee, that's sad. At least here, on the North side, we have our classrooms in schools ;D ;D.
Seriously though, if the condition is OK, mate & useful to the cause I'm more than willing to collect & drop off to Mark.

Justin, our thoughts were..
- to have it outside...we have a big screen inside our games room, but thought it would be nice to have an outside screen...(inside would be plan B in case the weather is crappy).
- people could bring their bean bags/ chairs, sit outside and watch the movie.
- Start off with a kids movie, earlier in the night, and then have an adult movie after.
- We have a campfire area, so we woild have that going....
- anyone that wants to stay, could. We have an acre, not not a huge amount of area, but we have had people camp over before
- and as for the drinks, this is Myswag.
So the help with the screen, is more to help build one for outside....

I also had an idea for a screen
I've got quite a bit of 90mm pvc pipe including bends and joiners
To make a frame up
An old tarp and zip ties
Just need to buy some vinyl paint or similar and paint it white
For some cover
I also have a 30' tarp, poles, pegs, ropes, eskys and beer  :D
A spit roster could be handy :D

I thought that if you pulled up in a caddy it was implied

Can I park the Caddy in front of the big screen like a drive-in?
May not be much room for camping if that happens though.

The local toyota dealer will have a 200 series on show that night. ;D

We came from a small town that had a population of 165, and school was held in the shed behind the two man police station. One combination teacher/headmaster. It may only be a shed, but it was a big shed and we didn't think it was sad at all.
Hang on, that may be BS.
The screen came from a Tech College, and it just going (if not already gone) to waste and could do with a new home. I will be back home in a day or two and have a look at it and measure it. If it is big enough and not toasted, for such a good cause as myswag fundraising I am happy to give it away.
Cheers

I went to a fundraising Movie night last night for the homeless. Was a great night out for the Family and a great idea

sounds like a top idea.............count us in and let me know what ya need (other than a massive screen).
-
Sounds like a great idea, I can help make a screen. I've found a silver tarp does a reasonable job.

OK. looked in the shed and the free screen possibilities are:
One (or two if desired) steel framed padded vinyl white screens. These have a steel frame behind so they can be suspended and swivel, or I guess you could lay them on them on the ground and make a big ass lazy susan. Size is 1600 x 1600 each, so would equal a square 89" TV screen, or two side by side a 140" screen with a stripe in the middle.
Another option is a whiteboards 1500 x 1200, galv backed, or two of them if desired. One would be a 76" square screen or two together 1500h x 2400w a 112" if my calcs are correct.
The padded vinyl ones are designed for overhead projector and movies use apparently and would need a good wipe down.
The padded ones and at least one white board have hooks that suspend them from wall mounted channels above school chalkboards.
They are at Waterford West if you wanted any.
Cheers

Something like this would be ideal for a screen https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/north-maclean/building-materials/h-duty-vinyl-tarps-buy-better-the-next-big-storm-12m-x-3m-50/1146741292 (https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/north-maclean/building-materials/h-duty-vinyl-tarps-buy-better-the-next-big-storm-12m-x-3m-50/1146741292)

Yeah, we might be up for this. :) Why not? Dog-friendly if outdoors, for dogs with manners? (He thinks he's a child, he'd be horribly sad to miss out!)
A mate who used to have movie nights at his place used to hang a white sheet off the side of his house. Worked pretty well actually. Sounds like you have some better suggestions though!

Ian, they both sound good.....is there either that would be better suited as screens for a projector ?
If so, I'll take 2 of them.....as both sizings will work if hung on part of the shed wall.
Let me know which you think will be better suited..then we'll work on some Swagmail...
Thanks for helping...

I think the soft vinyl ones would give a better picture result because they are supposedly designed for that use, plus they are little bit larger but the junction may be more noticable. I will have a closer look tomorrow and see how much difference there is in the edge.

Ian, what if we put some white tape over the join ? It is a Myswag back yard fund raising movie night...

I had a look this morning. The vinyl boards have a clear anodised aluminium channel protecting the edge with approx 19mm of exposed aluminium which either white tape or spray paint should cover easily. There is not much in the way of tapering of the face towards the edge and I can't see that being a problem. The whiteboards also have an exposed aluminium edge but also have a 3mm wide black rubber trim. Once again tape or paint should be fine.
Maybe it would be best to take all four boards and see what works best, and sell the unwanted ones on Gumtree to buy movie snacks.
Cheers

Is this going to qualify me for the Free Giveaway goodies, or being a selective donation rather than an open offer, will I have to offer some used socks or jocks?

How many uses left in the Jocks?
Socks can be used twice, Jocks 4 times.
We're wondering if it's worth the effort.

To save someone any extra effort, the jocks come with pre-installed skidmarks, but why only 2 uses for socks? In my old Army life we used to get an easy four days. Day 1. Normal use.Day 2. Rotate on the feet 180 deg. Day 3. Pull down a foot length and tuck under the foot. Day 4 Same tuck but rotated 180deg. Changing feet gave an additional four days but needed additional convincing.

Terra regarding the socks, you forgot the extra days by repeating the process by turning them inside out and starting all over again ;D ;D
