Hi all,
Went down to the local BBQ Galore yesterday with a 2kg & 4kg bottle to be refilled.
Put through the till as individual items totalling $26.95.
Asked why I couldn't pay for 8.5kg refill and they could keep the extra 2.5kg of gas for free - said he wasn't allowed to do this.
Has anyone come across a place that would?
Regards
-
Everywhere I've ever had bottles filled, it's dearer per kg for smaller bottles.
Makes sense when you think about it, as there is a fixed amount of time to hook up and disconnect regardless of the bottle size. You are paying for the gas, plus the labour to fill the bottle.
-
Across the ditch they charge by how much they put in. Great I think. Particularly touring, allows you to top bottles up when you can and only pay for what you use.

I throw my bottle on the scales to see how empty they are before taking them for filling.
The amount they weigh when they come back from being "filled" varies greatly. Some how the price never changes though. ;)
I'd love it if we paid by actual weight here. Every filling station should have a simple set of scales.
The last time I took the 2kg bottle in for a 'top up' I told the guy how much was in there. As he had to put less then 1kg of gas in he did me an awesome deal.... It only cost me $8 instead of $9. ::)

I don't know anywhere that would give that many Shits as to save you money on a gas fill. Even the shonky little Asian run corner store that didn't check dates on my cylinders has gone now :(
Now I need to get them checked :(

Rubbish, "swap n go" places rarely if ever check the dates, don't ask how I know >:D

I get my bottles filled at "B & E gas" in port kembla (near wollongong) & they charge by weight.

The 'swap n go' website actually says they will swap out of date cylinders, as long as they aren't damaged or badly rusted.

When I do swap and go, I check the date on the cylinder I'm getting, and when I give out cylinders, I find the ones with the longest date to give the customer.

There was nearly a punch up at the Straddie Roadhouse over Christmas.
The guy behind the counter refused to swap an old bottle with no swap and go sticker on it. Old mate with the empty bottle lost his lollies, but the dude behind the counter kept his cool the whole time and the 30 odd people in the store pissed them selves laughing when old hot head left with his empty bottle in his hand.... :D
-
Does SWAP'n'GO accept out-of-date bottles?
Yes!
We accept out of date bottles at no extra charge.

The bloke behind the counter was wrong.
The Elgas 'Swap n go' site says they will swap any 9kg or 4kg gas bottle, regardless of brand.

Straddie Roadhouse fills bottles (or used to) ... was he refusing to *fill* an out-of-date bottle?
-
To be honest I walked in on the middle of it, the whole scene had started before I got there.
While I was filling the car there were 2 guys at the swap and go box swearing their heads off.
As I walked in to pay for my fuel there was a big crowd already lined up. Old mate came storming in with his old bottle still swearing his head off, he slammed the bottle on the counter and went ballistic at the young guy behind the counter for about 10 minutes.
Obviously I couldn't see any dates on the bottle, but it clearly wasn't a swap and go bottle and it looked ancient.
The young guy could only say "I'm sorry, but I can't take that bottle".
Perhaps it would seam the young guy was possibly wrong (now that I've seen these previous post here).
But at the time it all seamed to me the young guy was right and the old guy swearing his head off in front of about 10 families was wrong.

Yeah, the date doesn't matter, but they won't swap them if they are damaged or very rusty.
It's all spelled out pretty clearly (and reasonably) on the web page.
Also agreed, very poor form for that bloke to go off tap at the young bloke and in front of everyone.

Yep, and if you need a new gas bottle they normally have a spot for old gas bottles at your local tip, just grab one and take it in.
-
And although it's been posted here before, here is a place to find the cheapest refills.

I go to B&E gas also.

Was passing through Julia Creek not so long ago and needed to fill 9kg cylinder.....pulled up at the local hardware shop to find out they weighed the cylinder and only charged for the gas they put in.....gas was a bit more expensive than home ......But we found it refreshing to find a store that only charged for what they supplied........ :cup: :cup: :cup: :cup:
Cheers Tracker.

haha, you have to pay a "donation" at our local tip, but you can't buy one from them because it's illegal for them to sell old bottles.
For the OP, I have seen a spring scale used to weigh bottles that I have got filled, but it would be a few years ago now. And the woman at one of the local servos refused to do a swap and go on one of their bottles that was out of date once, even though I explained that it was their bottle, and what the site says etc. The bottle was clean, no rust and clearly stickered, just 3 months out of date...Got too hard, as she was a stubborn old cow, so I took it up the road to another servo and no problem.

Is there really any difference in 8.5kg bottle that Swap and go uses and the 9kg I use at home? Do they fit the same 9kg mounting bracket?
Could be the difference in getting ya dinner cooked.
-
There is a cylinder testing / gas supply place which I normally get my bottles filled at.
He does them on a scale, but I've never taken one in which wasn't empty, so I have no idea if he charges less for a part fill.

They are exactly the same. The 9kg nominal bottles should only ever be filled to 8.5kg, and the 4kg to 3.7.

Go Camping in Balcatta WA refills by weight.

Perfect - close to home
Cheers - lots of gas bottle angst out there ;D

Only place I have ever paid for a partial fill is Desert Dwellers in Alice Springs. Wasn't that scientific, they just pick up the bottle and go "oh yeah, that's about 1/2 full" and charge accordingly. Even though it was a guess, I was happy with it.

They don't care, part of the service they offer.

I use 4kg ones , and the holders on the front of the van only fit a certain diameter bottle. Yep, most are different sizes and it's why I don't do swap & go.
As with all gas bottles I own, I wait till they are 9+ yrs old, THEN do a swap & go with the right size ( diameter ) and with at least 8 yrs remaining on the date stamp.

that is my concern.... don't wanna go swapping mounts all the time.
-
The content of the gas bottle is worth nothing. It's the service that your paying for. Hence very few charge by weight.
As for Swap n Go. I let go along time ago gas bottle ownership. Given i usually only have that particular bottle for 6-12 months. Who cares what the date says, as for size. It can be a small pain, but the bottle holders have pretty big adjustment for diameter.

I, like Gronk, have a KK with the weird size bottles. When they were about to run out of date I took them to Peninsula Gas and Fuel in Rosebud, who checked them out and restamped them. Cost was minimal and certainly saved mucking around with mounts, or paying through the nose at KK for new ones.

The Trangie Caravan Park (NSW WESTERN DISTRICTS) does it by weight ... $2.50kg ... so an empty 9kg is $22.50, and an empty 4.5kg is $11.25. Thus any gas already in those bottles, you do not pay for twice.
But that's just one example. On my website there are hundreds of locations where you can get gas that cheap ... and cheaper ... as little as $12.00 for a 9kg refill.
The website is free service to the public, and I don't sell any merchandise or ask for email addresses. But I am scared to name the site in case the moderators ban me. As an 80-year-old grey nomad, I just want to help people save money.

I managed to get to the site by just deleting the s out of https in the address bar so it read http

I already linked it for you here (http://www.myswag.org/index.php?topic=51296.msg885507#msg885507) and as davenmarcia points out, you may want to drop the "s" in the address in your signature.

So my bottle was last tested in 09 when it was new :D Dodgey little Asian bloke that filled it without even knowing what a date is, has closed the doors, so ... :(
Just called Supagas in Bayswater, $33 to have it tested, and refilled. Much cheaper than I expected! Takes 2 weeks - or if they have one the same there that your happy to swap, they will swap it on the spot...
New 4kg from Hideous green shed $34.00 no gas and they don't fill em anymore LOL....

That same green shed will do a swap and go for $17.88, which will give you a full, checked and date stamped bottle.

Yeah, well that's a problem.

Yeah, well that's a problem.
I know.. and dude on swap and go truck while back said they are going to go to 1 size in 9kg and 1 size in 4kg bottles soon.. so will make it harder for all :( unless changing cylinder brackets are cheap
-
They had a few different sized 4kg bottles when I swapped one of mine on Saturday.
Got what I needed, no probs.
Last time I checked, BCF still filled them.
-
Going to head down there in morning, and see if they have same size for swapping they can have mine and test it to their hearts content.
haven't priced 'buying' from swap and go as a new customer wanting a bottle without swapping one.. be interested to see, but cant find any prices mentioned anywhere....wonder why.....
-
Probably because it'll be at least $15.00 dearer than just a swap.

The prices for swapping or buying a full bottle outright were on the cage.
Don't remember what they were. I just wanted to swap.

It was cheaper for me to swap a really old outta date(by a long way). I Just chose a servo that was really busy >:D

The guy behind the counter does not work for swapngo and is just a reseller of gas, he refills empty bottles himself (on slow days he will refill your bottle, but at Xmas on swaps as it is silly busy)
I know this as I nearly bought the business

I know the local family servo where I fill up cars and gas are pretty honest, if I take a half full bottle in the will charge be half price where most places will still charge full price

For them to do that would require 2 things to achieve this outcome
1, rationalise all their existing stock including the 3 or 4 in my yard and the other thousands of bottles out in service, achievable yes but would take some time.
2, refuse to except the current practice of owner bottles in all shapes.
Just thought of a 3rd reason, the Bunnings staff along with the Indian servo attendant would need to check the hand in bottles against some form of bottle gauge. I can't see that happening, it is hard enough find staff to help you at Bunnings and the servo attendant normally just gives you the key to the cage for self service as he or she can't leave the service console.

I was replying to a comment "The guy behind the counter refused to swap an old bottle with no swap and go sticker on it." so you will have to forgive me for assuming it was a 'swap n go' outlet.
-
Dunno about you lot but I don't care if my 8.5 is still quarter full on the road and there's a Bunnings handy and I know I'm not going to make it to the next one on the road and I may be paying up to $45 for a fill even if it's empty. Filling is a service and not just the price of the gas and I had to wait a fair while at busy Nullarbor for the roustabout to get back and fill my Swapngo when I'd muffed the hot water trick (getting old). Stuff that crawling under the Jayco bed with it mounted on the drawbar after you've boiled the kettle still set up. I want to do it when the Jayco is packed up anytime and not get it wrong :cup:

Just buy a composite bottle, transparent so you can see what's left and 50% lighter. http://www.chsmith.com.au/Products/Ragasco-Composite-LPG-Gas-Bottle.html (http://www.chsmith.com.au/Products/Ragasco-Composite-LPG-Gas-Bottle.html)
Only problem is the price >:(
Quite popular in Europe though and the inlaws have them in their motorhome.
