Hi,
we have a dual cab SR5 hilux, she wants a canopy on the tray - I've just picked my jaw up off the floor after receiving a quote! they are bloody expensive, I didn't expect them to be dirt cheap but close enough to 4k to purchase one and have it installed is scaring me away big time. Is there a cheaper option out there, i like the idea of a second hand steel tray for around $900, alloy frame and put a canvas canopy on it like i did with my last ute, reality is that will probably end up close to 4k aswell.
Im struggling with options here. We are back living in the pilbara so exploring is high on the agenda once again.
Any other ideas floating around out there i could look at?
Thanks

Try TJM, mine was a lot cheaper than the price you mentioned, mine was about $2.700. The interesting point about the TJM canopy is I didnt need to purchase the internal frame to support the roof racks as the canopy is made twice the thickness to allow for the racks and load, its been through the outback with a spare tyre and other gear up there and no problems so far. I didnt find any others that do double thickness.

Was that price including fitting? good to know about the double thickness as the supports needed on the one i was quoted were another $900 on top of what i mentioned above

$4K is a fairly cheap canopy IMHO, yes you can get them a touch cheaper then that, but you can easily spend between $10K - $20K to get custom made colour coded aluminium canopies for vehicles.

3.5 years ago I paid $3500 for a colour coded ARB canopy with lift up side and front windows. That was a fitted price. Unfortunately you have to add both WA tax and remote tax.

Are 2nd hand units an option?

I've all ways had ARB canopies fitted. Last one with internal supports for a roof rack, one lift up and one slide window for the muts.
Got change out of $3k colour coded. But that was their basic fibreglass/plastic one.
These days canopies hacve Central locking, matching interior lights, automatic windows and all sorts of sh1t fitted to them now.
Can you still get a basic canopy?

Yes, fitted

What about $2600 for a mates rates tools alloy box just on the tray? Eveything is then dust and water proof and only have to lift a door to access gear.

This was not quoted from up here, was back in Qld at my home town, i always quote back home first so i can compare and see how much difference. generally speaking over my two stints living up here i have found the guys at the 4wd shops not to bad at all to be honest

Unfortunately one of those wont be suitable, as i still need to put my racing bicycle in the back when i go away racing etc and the dog occaisionally

Is it cheaper to get one second hand and have it painted?

Or go for that '2 tone' look.

We went for a TJM fitted 3XM canopy, colour matched to our Navara for about $2600 fitted. Nothing flash, lift up window one side, slider the other. The only fancy bit is a LED light. No central locking etc. TJM told me it is suitable for roof racks without bracing but haven't done that yet. Planning to b fore our anticipated 2018 Cape York trip...
